Frederik VI (Tynic pronunciation: [ˈfʁæðˀʁæɡ̊], full name: Frederik Håkon Ólafur Ragnar Karl-Gustav de Lyksborg; born 1st October 1989) is the 55th reigning Archking of Sjealand. By right he is also the Supreme Authority in Ríkr Átrunaðr, Head of State of Sjealand, Supreme Commander of the Sjealandian Armed Forces.
Born into the House of Lyksborg to the elderly Prince Knud of Sjealand, he was at first not viewed as heir to the throne as his 17 year older cousin once removed Valdemar XII had assumed the throne in 1980. Valdemar, however, suffering from Leukemia due to his fathers smoking habit proved not only weak and sickly but also sterile and was unable to father a child with his consort Wilhelmina of Holstein. Thus when Valdemar succumbed to his illness in 2001, at age 29, Frederiks father, at the time 72 took the throne as Archking Kristian IX. Frederik thus became heir-presumptive to the throne at age 12. He began undertaking public duties after his graduation from gymnasium in 2006.
Upon his father's death in 2012, Frederik became Archking of Sjealand at the age of 23, unmarried and still in university. He was allowed to finish the remaining 6 months of his studies before officially beginning his duties as Archking.
His philanthropical and charitable work, as well as his charismatic demeanour and public appearances, has made Frederik one of Sjealand's most popular monarchs. While keeping to tradition he has managed to bring the ancient institution into the modern age by appearing in tv-shows, wandering Asgård and often inviting the public into his homes.
Early life
Frederik was born on the 1st of October 1989 at the private hospital located within Asgård Palace as the first and only child of Prince Knud of Sjealand and Princess Johanne de Danneskiold. During his birth Asgård was suffering from a severe storm, which Gudstaler Ymer Helvand declared to be Tor celebrating the birth. His mother was the daughter of Grand Duke Elvar II of Lhynn, who along with Emperor Katak of Tuthina, Cucumenthi II of Karazawa, Xionghe Ditu of Akai and Klemens Reanhart Falkenbach pretender to Austrosia acted as his guardians on his bloodletting, each painting part of his body with blood and pledging to defend and raise the Prince, should his family die. At the time of his birth Sjealand was going through a period of prosperity, which had seen its economic output skyrocket after a tech-boom in the early eighties and the monarchy enjoyed high support. Thus even though he was the son of a prince and who no one thought would be king, his naming and bloodletting in Asgård Grand Temple in the 28th October still attracted crowds of tens of thousands. To honour royal Sjealandian tradition he was named Frederik, one of the 3 Kingly names of Sjealand.
He was named Frederik after his paternal grandfather, Håkon was chosen by the Norwegians, Ólafur by the Fjallanders in northern Sjealand, Ragnar by the Tynics and Karl-Gustav by the Borealians and Swedes. Since his father was also Grand Commander of the Velvet Lion he was raised to Knight of Prosperity. With his cousin once removed Valdemar XII growing ever more ill, Valdemar began introducing Frederik to the life of Archking, bringing him along on royal visits and treating him more like an heir than Frederik's father Kristian IX who, as an old and frail man was never thought to become monarch.
He did not attend kindergarten, instead of being brought up at court with the children of prominent nobility in Sjealand at Asgård Palace against his father wishes. Already at a young age, he proved a charismatic boy, taking a leadership role amongst the boys and often getting scolded for convincing them to follow him on various plots, which a source in the palace often leaked to the press, much to Prince Knud's chagrin. His father had managed to convince the more conservative Valdemar XII to allow Frederik to attend public school, and at age 5 he started attending Nordre Skole, in central Asgård. According to his teachers, he was a successful student, who excelled in the humanities while remaining above average in science and math. However, he had a tendency to take command of groups of boys, acting as a natural leader, while however not taking part in any bullying and in fact taking a stance against it. As a result, the Sjealandian non-profit Fri for mobberi (No more bullying) adopted him as a protector and front figure of their organisation.
When his mother died in 1999, Frederik suffered a severe depression, as his father was unable to show the same affection, causing a rift between the two, Frederiks grades also started declining. This was only further worsened when Valdemar XII, whom Frederik looked to both as an older brother and as a father figure grew more sickly, eventually dying on the 7th of February 2001.
Heir presumptive
As Valdemar XII drew his last breaths, with his family around him, the Crown Council of Sjealand began its work preparing the old and frail Prince Knud for his coronation. The 72-year-old monarch was neither the son of the preceding king nor the king before him. His father King Kristian IIX died in 1962 and in the eyes of many Knud was a relic of the past. In correspondence, Knud changed his name to Kristian, so to fit in with the established system of monarchial names. On his coronation in July 2001, he also named his 12-year-old son Frederik Duke of Miklagård and Crown Prince of Sjealand. Frederik has spoken that the beginning of his father's reign were some of his most unhappy years as he had lost a dear friend in Valdemar XII and as Kristian IX, growing ever older grew distant from Frederik. At his Herreprøver at age 13, Frederik and his father were reported to not speak more than necessary and discounting their speeches cold and hostile towards each other.
When he graduated Folkeskole at age 15 he and his family chose to enrol him in Pontoppidans Gymnasium in Nordvakt Niflheim, a private boarding school for the Sjealandian elite. Eager to get away from his father and the gloomy atmosphere in Asgård, Frederik moved there in the summer of 2004, deciding to spend his summer vacation there instead of with his father. At the school, he reportedly received good grades, mastering Tynic, Swedish, Norwegian, Fjallandic French and Nevan. Socially the crown prince also grew, making friends with the elite of the Sjealandian Nobility and richer commoners. Reportedly he also began a relationship with Mér Bregjsdœttr, daughter of future Fjallandic prime minister Bregj Tryggsso. The relationship, which initially was a happy one helped to improve Sjealand-Fjallandic relations but after Frederik broke it off in 2006 the relationship between Frederik and Mér as well as her father by extension, rapidly soured.
Throughout his stay at Pontoppidans Gymnasium Frederik and his father were not on speaking terms, only communicating through intermediaries, this was commonly known by the public, who while very critical of Kristian IX saw Frederik as childish in his actions. Not being able to talk with his father, Frederik instead sought advice from his guardians, most notably and controversially Xionghe Ditu of Akai, who was seen as a madman in Sjealand. The relationship between Xionghe Ditu and Frederik was seen as unhealthy, as Ditu was known for the harsh war crimes he committed in Akai, and the fact he advised Frederik was the cause of a severe drop in support for the monarchy. Public pressure did eventually force Frederik to stay away from Akai and made Ditu stay out of Sjealand for Frederik's sake, though it caused a dip in Akai-Sjealandian relations. While the cruel Ditu did not have a lasting effect on Frederik, his skill in fencing did kickstart the youngs man talent for sword fighting, and the support of Juhani and Esja eventually managed to bring Frederik and Kristian IX on speaking terms, even if dislike was still harsh between them.
In 2006 Frederik graduated from Pontoppidans Gymnasium at the age of 18. After the graduation ceremony and receiving the customary Student Cap and sabre he went on the traditional student round in Nordvakt, driving through the city and the surrounding region for a week, drinking and celebrating. This was heavily covered by the tabloid which called it the first time in years Frederik was truly happy. The summer of the same year he moreover began taking on public duties as he was no seen as a grown man. He spectated and opened 2006 University Battles in Vordinge where his interest in Academic fencing reportedly began. With the end of that summer, he enrolled in the Sjealandian Armed Forces for 1 year of conscripted service. Passing the examination he was granted a place in the Kavaler korps one of Sjealands best special forces corps. Far left politicians speculated that he was granted leniency because of his rank but the prince denied the rumours.
After a year's service, he left the armed forces to attend Asgård University in 2007, where he enrolled in International Security and Law. Additionally, he joined the Golden Lions fraternity soon after he his enrollment, becoming an eager fencer who was often found on the campus grounds duelling with other students. While his studies progressed he eventually became one of the university's prime fencers and earned a place at the 2010 Univeristy Battles where he made a name for himself as a fast and precise fencer. He made his way to the finals before being defeated by Janus Magnusson of Nordvakt Uni, who slashed Frederik across the eye, gaining the prince a honour scar. Frederik and Janus remain long-time friends after the 2010 UB.
With his father growing increasingly demented and old, Frederik was forced to take over many of his father duties while he was still a student as the now 81 year old monarch barely had any strength left besides his hatred for his son. He often berated Frederik's work and his more plebian approach to monarchy, seeing Frederiks attempt to reconnect with the people after Kristians angry 11 years of rule as pandering. However, this was still not enough to keep him alive and he passed away on the 7 November 2012.
Upon his father's death Frederik was summoned to Asgård Palace from his residence at Søskøn Palace outside the city. The Crown Council informed him of Kristians passing and gave him a day to prepare a speech before his reign would begin. The following day all temples in Asgård played their gongs and drums in sorrow over the death of the Archking. From the Grand Balcony of the palace, Frederik proclaimed the sorrow the people and the nation was in, notably never saying he himself was in sorrow. His coronation was set to be on the winter solstice of the same year, and Frederik was coronated in a grandiose ceremony in the 21st of December, the first coronation in the world to be livestreamed online.
Reign
With his father gone, Frederik fully embraced his position as monarch. Starting out from the middling support the monarchy had endured during his father's reign, Frederik managed to increase support for the monarchy via heavily engaging himself with the population and remaining as apolitical as possible outside of his position in the Rigsdag. Using the connections he had forged through his youth he expressed himself as an active monarch, not content with staying in Asgård Palace like his father. He started a large campaign of him attending various sporting, cultural and religious events to best show himself off to the public. Moreover, he had several portraits taken and painted of himself dressed both traditionally and international and made public. In an effort to introduce the public to himself he appeared in the 5 episode tv-program Hos de Kongelige (With the Royals) on STV-K. These measures were successful as support for the monarchy increased to the level it had before Kristian IX and stabilized around 82% over the following years.
During his reign, Frederik has made efforts to be seen as a quick, calculating leader with a sharp wit and charisma, and has personally taken part in many international meetings in order to further his image as the natural leader of Sjealand. He lets the public view his life, both via common interviews, but also via his NordTalk profiles as well as frequent appearances on public TV and Radio. However, while he has taken efforts to appear human to the Sjealandian public and has reached down to the public he still maintains a clear distinction between the people and the monarchy. Barring tourists and Sjealandian citizens from much of Asgård palace as well as his private retreats. Only opening some palaces to the general public, while opening the gardens of others.
His reign has seen Sjealandian efforts in Nordania and outside increase, with Sjealandian involvement in the Nordanian League and Commonwealth of Sovereign States increasing. Moreover, during his reign Sjealand has seen a rise in foreign interventionism, seeing Sjealand send armed efforts to support Vjaarland during the 2017 Kinzeria Crisis. However it has also been a reign of culture and religion as Frederik has helped cement the dominance of Sjealandian culture over all others in Sjealand, as well as the importance of Ríkr Átrunaðr in Sjealand.
Personal life and interests
Most of Frederik's interests lie in the outdoors, and he is an avid lover of nature. As an accomplished equestrian, he has participated in many equestrian tournaments and competitions over the years like Saddelløbet as well as having taken an interest in jousting, in which he competes under the scarlet stag of his spouse. In addition his abilities as a fencer are well known, and he has been interred in the Hall of Fame of the Sjealandian Mensur Union for his efforts in promoting academic fencing abroad, and for his long list of victories both on a national scale, and at Asgård University where he remains the fencer with the most victories. A tradition instilled in himself is his annual opening of the National University Mensur Duels which take place on the showgrounds of Asgård University each year in May. He owns a large collection of weaponry, partly from his own collection and partly inherited from his father, which he is often seen donning during official duties. Amongst these weapons are professionally made rifles from the major weapons companies of the world, specifically requested by himself, as well as meteorite-forged blades by the Priests of Tyr. He himself has also made it a tradition of handing over one of these swords to the victor of each annual University Battles. His love for traditional Sjealandian folklore has often come to fruition through his choice of wearing classical clothes of the Sjealandian rural population on many occasions as well as him naming the Royal Yacht Midgårdsormen. His preferred clothing style has always been the long asymmetrical Sjealandian coats, which he usually wears. In 2010 he was a background actor in the Sjealandian epic war film Norden where he played a Sjealandian soldier fighting in Fjalland.
Through the CMF he maintains ownership over several large Sjealandian and international investment firms as well as several sporting teams across the world including FC Nazareth in Luziyca and FC Elsbridge in Ambrose. All added up his total net worth is estimated at around 34,5 Billion $.
Like most of the Sjealandian population he is an avid drinker, often being spotted drinking in private with international as well as national figures. He has had a lifelong loyalty to the Carlsberg Beer breweries of Asgård, who are appointed as the Royal Brewers. In private he also enjoys Gin and Akvavit. As a chain smoker, he is infamous for his tobacco habit and has often been seen smoking pipes or cigarettes in public, but has released a statement that he will not smoke inside any of his palaces or in the vicinity of dignitaries or non-smoking family. In 2016 he appeared as a one-time co-host for the Sjealandian TV-Show Go'aften Sjælland (Good'evning Sjealand) for three episodes where he among other things showed the public his skill and love for cooking, especially traditional meaty Vjaarlandic dishes. During a TV-spotlight on him, an experiment was made where he would tour the streets of Asgård and other Sjealandian cities interacting with the local population, listening to their stories and discovering new parts of the cities. After the end of this experiment, he has continued this tradition and can often be spotted in the pedestrian zones of Sjealand.
