Arcaenia (Arcaenian: Arkaenia), officially the Arcaenian Reich (Arcaenian: Arkaenien Reich) is a Nordic island country in Greater Dienstad. Arcaenia has a total area of 2,495,401 square kilometers and a population of 103,040,100 (as of 2030). Arcaenia has a fairly low population density of 41.3 people per square kilometers with the highest population concentrations along the southern coast. The capital and largest city is Hyperia with a population just over 1.4 million. Despite its extreme northern latitude Arcaenia has a fairly temperature climate with mild lowland temperatures along the coasts and a colder interior. Arcaenia is a Republic with legislative power vested in the 397 member Reichstagand is a unitary state divided into 23 counties and 297 municipalities. Arcaenia is a member of the Triumverate, a military alliance with the Empire of the Golden Throne of The Macabees and The Kingdom of Imbrinium. Arcaenia is known for its free-market economy with a relatively low corporate tax rate, economic tripartism with high trade union membership, and social welfare system providing universal health care and tuition-free university education for its citizens.

Geography

Arcaenia is located in the northernmost part of Central Dienstad. Arcaenia is borders by the Sea of Storms to the southwest, the Arcaenian sea to the east, and the Sea of Thule to the north. The nearest countries are Imbrinium to the south, Acadia to the west, and Guorori to the east. The country with mainland and islands has a total area of 2,495,401 square kilometers of which 60% is tundra, 15% is glaciers or water, and 25% is vegetation. Less than 2% of the landmass is arable land with less than 1% of the land being under cultivation. Arcaenia's coastline is broken up by several thousand fjords which can extend over 200 kilometers inland. The interior of Arcaenia is dominated by mountainous terrain and highlands covered with permafrost and large glaciers and is mostly cold and uninhabitable with an Arctic tundra climate.

Climate

The coasts of Arcaenia have a maritime subarctic climate that is exposed to warmer oceanic breeze and ocean storm fronts resulting in more precipitation and milder winters compared to areas further inland. The southern and western coasts of the Island are generally warmer and wetter than the coasts along the north and east with the warm ocean breeze from the Sea of Storms ensuring that the southern and western coast remains ice free even in the winter. Average winter temperatures are 0 °C (32 °F) along the southern and western coasts and −10 °C (14 °F) along the northern and eastern coast with the colder interior parts of the island averaging −25 to −30 °C (−13 to −22 °F). Summer temperatures average 10–13 °C (50–55 °F) across the island with the hottest summer days reaching 20–25 °C (68–77 °F).

Animals

The native land mammals of Arcaenia include the Arctic fox and the grey wolf. Wild land mammals introduced by the original human settlers of Arcaenia include reindeer, moose, mice, and rabbits. Domestic animals of Arcaenia include sheep, cattle, chickens, goats, horses, and sheepdogs who are descendants of animals brought by settlers.

Politics

Government

Arcaenia is a parliamentary, representative democratic republic with a Chancellor as the head of government and a Prime Minister as head of state. The Chancellor is elected by direct popular vote for a term of four years with no term limits. The Prime Minister is appointed by the Chancellor as are the other members of the government cabinet who with the Chancellor collectively form the executive branch of the Arcaenian government. Legislative power is vested in the Reichstag, a unicameral parliament with 397 members who are elected to four-year terms based on Party-list proportional representation. The judiciary of Arcaenia consists of the Supreme Court (Höchstgericht) and district courts and is independent of the executive and the legislature.

Demographics

Arcaenia's population as recorded by the Government was recorded at 103,040,100 in July 2030. Arcaenia is a historically linguistically, ethnically and culturally homogeneous nation with 98.5% of the population being ethnic Arcaenian with the rest being foreign workers staying in Arcaenia on a semi-permanent basis. Arcaenia has an average age of 36.5 years with 0.97 males per female. The total fertility rate (TFR) in 2020 was estimated at 2.19 children born per woman, slightly above the he replacement rate of 2.1, with the population growing at an annual average rate of 1.1%. The southern coast of Arcaenia including the capital Hyperia is the most densely populated region with approximately 70% of the population living in the central or southern part of the country.

Language

Arcaenia's official written and spoken language is Arcaenian, a North Ordenite language descended from Proto Ordenite language. Arcaenian uses a 29-letter latin based alphabet adopted in the 13th century although the traditional Arcaenian runic alphabet continues to see use on a semi-official basis for inscriptions, seals, and runic calendars. Both Stevidian Ordenite are compulsory subjects in primary school with about 90% of the adult population reporting being fluent in Stevidian and 50% fluent in Ordenite.
