There is one patrol approximately per 250 inhabitants. In a troop, there are four patrols with cadets 11–12, 13–14, 15–16 and 17–18. Smaller villages combine with surrounding villages to form patrols of the appropriate size and composition. Each patrol is commanded by a corporal, aged between 14 to 18, usually older than the cadets in the junior patrols, but the same age in the senior patrols. He is assisted by a lance corporal, who is usually the most experienced or leading member of the patrol.
