Liskovsk is a landlocked tysyacha in Venadia in northern Kandovy, neighboring Khandagrad Tysyacha in the south, Svokin in the east, Tonovsk and Venagorod Tysyacha in the north and Naskoslav in the west. Several rivers run through Liskovsk, and the land is relatively fertile considering its northern latitude. Like most of central Venadia, it has a continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. It is part of the Venadian heartland, and ethnic Venadians are the sole native ethnic group in the tysyacha.

History

Liskovsk was first settled around the 3rd or 4th century, and archeological digs indicate that the tysyacha is unique among northern Venadia to have only been historically settled by slavic peoples. The tysyachas modern capital, Gorograd, originated as Haraldgard in 946 and was established as a trading post by Breheimian invaders. Unlike many parts of Venadia that were colonized by Breheimians in the 9th and 10th century, Liskovsk saw little opposition to the nordics. Tributes were relatively mild compared to others, and intermarriage between the nordic settlers and the native slavs was common. Liskovsk became the last Venadian territory to end tributes paid to the Breheimians, and many of Liskovsk's noble families trace their lineage back to unions with the nordics.

In the middle ages, Liskovsk became the primary battleground between the Republic of Venagorod and the Grand Duchy of Kandovy, with the 1st Venagorod-Kandovy War primarily fought over the lands of Liskovsk. Liskovsk became fully annexed into the Republic of Venagorod following the 2nd Venagorod-Kandovy War in 1106, but was transferred to Kandovy in 1377 long after the establishment of the Republic of Venadia. The capital of Kharaldgorod was renamed Gorograd in 1377 as well, against the wishes of the Liskovsk aristocracy to the contrary.

In the mid 19th century, the first Liskovsk coal mines were established in the north-east of the tysyacha who would become a bulwark of the areas' economy. With the growth of the mining industry, trade unionization and syndicalism took root. Labour conflicts between the coal miners and the companies would grow increasingly militant towards the end of the century, and Liskovsk was the only area in the north with active Apalkovist Regiments during the anarchist rebellion.

Politics

Liskovsk is one of the only Liberal-Republican strongholds in the Venadian heartland, particularly in the central and western areas of the tysyacha. The Patriotic Party also consider Liskovsk one of its strongholds, with broad support in several old mining towns. The Socialist Party also fares well in the east, as well as in some agricultural communities along the Damara river. In recent years, the Democratic Party has become a prominent political party in the tysyacha, managing to attract support on a broad basis along its entire territory.

The current Liskovsk governor is Alexander Bazanov, who has governed the tysyacha since 1983, making him Venadia's currently longest-serving governor.

Economy

Liskovsk is a developed and diverse economy, with industry, mining, healthcare, transportation, education, agriculture and electricity production being major components of the economy. Liskovsk's per capita GDP is middling in terms of Venadian majority districts, and boasts decent growth. The mining industry has taken a downturn in the past decades, with the closing of several coal mines in the north-eastern Liskovsk. Unemployment is relatively low at 8.7%, but reaches more than 20% in some of the former mining towns.
