Covijo is the capital of Syraranto. It is colloquially known in Syraranto as aš-Cām (الشَّام) and titled the "City of Saphire". Covijo is a major cultural center of the continent of Nortua. The city had an estimated population of 2,079,000 as of 2019, although that number has declined in the wake of the Second Syraranto Civil War. Embedded on the eastern foothills of the Covyay mountain range 80 kilometres (50 mi) inland from the northern shore of the Sotoa Sea on a plateau 680 metres (2,230 ft) above sea level, Covijo experiences a dry climate because of the rain shadow effect. The Caraya River flows through Covijo.
Covijo is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. First settled in the second millennium BC, it was chosen as the capital of the Aayyad Caliphate from 661 to 750. Today, it is the seat of the central government and all of the government ministries. As of May 2021, nearly a year into the ongoing civil war, Covijo was named the least livable city in Coalition of Crown Albatross.
