In 1499, Thubani was settled by Orioni in a colonial enterprise. In 1969, it became the last Orinese colony to gain its independence. The island voted by referendum in 1982 to join with San Ba, with which it shared strong ethno-cultural ties. However, a large Orinese minority remains present on the island.
