Nicoletiane, officially the Commonwealth of Nicoletiane, also known as Gahadaghea, is a country in central Asteria Superior. It is bordered by Rizealand to the north and insert to the south. With an estimated population of around 6.1 million, it is the least populated country on the Asteria Superior mainland. Nicoletiane is a representative democracy. Its capital and largest city is Ruesville.

History

The Gahadaghean Range has been populated by the (Joneganoh people since prehistory. After the Gaullican conquest of Estmere’s colonies in Asterias Superior, the region was nicknamed Nicoletiane after the consort of then-King Louis VI of Gaullica, whose marriage occurred only a few years after the colonies were signed over. By this time, the Gahadagheans were still free of Euclean colonists due to treaties with the Joneganoh people.

During the Asterian War of Secession, the Joneganoh were allied to the Gaullicans against the United Colonies. The Fáel descendants of 16th century Caldian Solarian Catholic immigrants entered the region, pushing aside the native Joneganoh as their ability to repel such invasions was sapped by the Colonial armies. By 1780, the Euclean (of both Caldian and Estmerish) population of Gahadaghea numbered in the tens of thousands and already outnumbered the native Joneganoh.

In the Treaty of Vicalvi, the mountains were ceded to !Marchenia, as existing Caldian settlements in the region were illegal and seen as illegitimate. By this time, the coal reserves present in the Gahadagheans were already seeing their value realized in the early stages of the Industrial Revolution. Caldian-descended miners in the region found themselves in increasing conflict with Esmeiran-descended migrants. This economic competition between groups of disparate background came to a fever pitch at the !1800 Battle of Laurel Run, after which point !Marchenian troops began a violent campaign against Caldian-descended miners. Paramilitary groups, including the Free Mountain Gang, fight an active campaign against !Marchenian troops. Rizealand, pressured by internal support for ethnic Caldians and increasing dependence on Gahadaghean coal, began a military presence in the mountains soon after. The crisis ends in the Treaty of Ruesville, whereby Nicoletia finds independence from !Marchenian control.

The Treaty of Ruesville included provisions that altered the boundaries of Ghahadaghean claims. The Eastern Joneganohan Reservation was created out of the former Gallant and Victor Counties, an establishment enforced by Rizealand as part of their Native Asterian protection campaigns. In exchange, Rizealand ceded to Nicoletiane fertile farmland in the Mooreland Purchase.

In the early 20th century, waves of labor strikes gripped the nation. Insert Coal Wars analogue labor movements. Chistovodian/Kirenian support? Rizealand intervention? Socialism does *NOT* take hold.

Early 20th century, New Free Mountain Gang is a racial supremacist group. Anti-Esmeriano, pro-Estmerish-Caldian White.

Military

Nicoletiane maintains a standing army, but suffers in its dated technology. One year of military service is required by law of all adult men. The Nicoletianan Guardsmen number approximately 100,000, with 2% of the national GDP being spent on defense. Nicoletiane has no permanent ability to export military force internationally. Nicoletiane maintains no navy, and the air force numbers fewer than 50 aircraft.

Religion

Solarian Catholicism arrived in the Asterias soon after the Amendist Schism. Religious pilgrims from Caldia, settled in the Fáel region since the 16th century, flooded Gahadaghea after the Asterian War of Secession. Insert reason for this flood here later. Solarian Catholicism thus accounts for the majority of modern Nicoletiane’s religious makeup, aided further by !Marchenia’s local Catholic population. Irreligion has been relatively contained, accounted for by only 20-30% of Nicoletianans.
