Kotowari City historically had the name "Kiḻakkiṉ Nakai", or just "Kiḻakkin", meaning "The Jewel of the East". The name was given to the city originally by [[Orioni|Orinese]] explorers who visited the city in the early 11th century. The first time a name similar to it's modern name was mentioned was in the 1750s, in a scripture written named "Nakaraṅkaḷiṉ Puttakam" which names the city: "கோட்டோவாரி நகரம்" or "The City of Kotovari".
