Margarita Pinaria (Margarita Pinaria Natta Sarantena Isabella Maria; b. 10 December 1990), less frequently referred to as Margarita of Cularo, is a Latin noblewoman of the Pinaria family. Margarita became Crown Princess of Aretias and Sebastokratorissa upon her marriage to the future Basil IV of Aretias in 2013. She became Queen consort of Aretias following Basil's ascension to the throne in September 2014. She ceased to be consort in 2018 when her marriage to Basil ended in an divorce. Prior to her marriage to Basil IV, Margarita was married to Prince Dionysios of Perateia, with whom she had two sons.
Early life and education
Margarita Pinaria Martiana Isabella Maria was born at Palatium Cularo, in Cularo, on 10 December 1990, to Latin nobleman Michael Pinarius and Princess Lucille of Turenne. Margarita was the couple's oldest daughter and third child. She has two older brothers, Alexius and Sergius, and two younger sisters Gabriella and Gregoria. Margarita was baptized into the Imperial Church by Auxiliary Bishop of Ravenna Silvanus Potitus. She was named Margarita for her ancestor Margaret, Holy Audonian Empress and Margaret I, Elecrtress of Turenne; and Martiana for her grandmother's family. Her baptismal names are Isabella for her maternal great-grandmother Elisabeth of Nyrundy and Maria for her paternal great-grandmother Maria of Keld. She was given the additional name of Sarantena for her maternal grandmother's family. Her godparents are Stephania Pinaria (her father's sister); Jacobus, Prince of Youth (Stephania's husband); then Raymond, Duke of Chamonix (her mother's brother); and Louise of Rahdenburg-Neuenburg (Raymond’s wife).
Margarita was first formally presented to the imperial court of Empress Diana I Anicia and Emperor Leo X Claudius at the age of three. Despite regularly visiting Castellum to see extended family, Margarita did not move to the capital until the age of 9 when her family took up residence at Collidomus<!--hill house-->, an aristocratic townhouse owned by the Pinaria family. Her family relocated to Castellum in 1999 when father was elected to the Senate and her grandfather was appointed Master of Offices by the newly ascended sole emperor Jacobus VI Claudius the following year. As a child, Margarita and her family traveled to visit extended family frequently, including her cousins in Garza and Garima. Her family regularly vacationed near the city of Mariana, Imbros.

Aretian Royal Family
She continued her education in Castellum at Lyceum Sanctus Michaelis, where she was classmates with nobility and royalty such as her cousin Princess Maria, Maria of Garza, and Antonia Antistia. She reportedly struggled at school and was also instructed by a number of private tutors. Margarita was diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of 9. Later she earned her bac from Caelimontium-Saint Sophia Ladies College in 2007.
Basil IV (Basileios Stephanos Ioannes Konstantinos Markianos; born 16 July 1988) has been King of Aretias since 2 October 2015. He became King following the death of his father King Andronikos III.

Basil is the second child and eldest son of Despot Andronikos III and Irene of Nyrundy. He became heir apparent in 2010, and was granted the title of Sebastokrator. Basil was educated in Aretias and Garima, and later earned a degree and military officer training at Academia Militaris Olympia.
Margarita enrolled at the City College of Alba in fall 2007 and did not take a gap year. During the summer leading into her first year of university, Margarita traveled extensively and visited Ostrozava, Alanahr, Kembesa, Vardana all within a month. She also spent two weeks in Perateia with her future first husband Dionysios of Perateia.

Basil has ruled Aretias as an absolute monarch since his ascension to the throne in 2015. The government has curbed the rights of religious minorities, especially among the Yen community, and alleged extrajudicial killings performed by the Royal Guard. His personal dealings have led to various diplomatic and dynastic disputes with neighboring Perateia. The divorce of his first wife, Margarita Pinaria, led to fears of a possible invasion, and has resulted in an strengthened military presence throughout Aretias.
In 2011, Margarita earned a degree in Theater, Dance, & Media, also taking courses in Film and Visual Studies. While at Alba College, she participated in Theater Club, and participated in numerous productions, including Cruenta Maria and Pavor.
Early life
Marriage to Dionysios of Perateia
Basil was born on the morning of 16 July 1988, at Aplekton, in Basilakia, the oldest son and second child of then Crown Prince Andronikos and Irene of Mysia and Nyrundy. He has one older sister, Stephania, a younger brother Robert, and two younger sisters, Gregoria and Xene. At the time of his birth, Basil was second in line to the throne, following his father and displacing his sister Stephania.
On 10 August 2009, at 19 years old, she married Dionysios of Perateia who at the time was the heir apparent to the Despot of Euneos. The pair were introduced by Dionysios’ sister Anna, who was a classmate of Margarita’s at Caelimontium-Saint Sophia Ladies College. The marriage was brief, but happy. Their first child, Andreas, was born on 9 January 2010. The couple primarily resided in Castellum throughout their marriage as Margarita was studying at Alba College despite her husband’s active deployment in the Perateian Imperial Army.

He was christened on 30 August 1988, by Ecumenical Patriarch Gennadios IV, at Hagia Euergetou in Leonople, Perateia. He was named Basilios for his grandfather, King Basil III. He was given the middle names Stephanos in memory of his great-grandfather Stephen V, Elector of Nyrundy, who was also King Stephen I of Mysia, and Konstantinos after his great-great grandfather Despot Constantine II, and Markianos for his great-great grandmother Marcia of Latium. Basil's godparents are then Michael, Archduke of Nyrundy (his mother's brother); Fausta Tarpeia (Michael's wife); Prince Constantine Byzennios (his father's brother); and PLACEHOLDER (Constantine's wife).
The marriage ended on 26 May 2011, when Dionysios was killed in a minor standoff between a Perateian garrison, near the city of Rhodopolis, and Vardanan Republican Guard across the Perateian-Vardani border. On 2 February 2012, Margarita gave birth to their second child, whom she named Dionysios after her late husband.
Heir apparent
Aretias
At 12 years old, Basil became heir apparent to the Aretian throne following the death of his grandfather on 22 August 2000. He immediately became Crown Prince upon his father's ascension, and was invested as Sebastokrator on 19 November 2000.
In late 2012, Margarita's family was first contacted by the court of Andronikos III of Aretias to discuss a courtship and possible marriage negotiation between Margarita and his heir Basil. The match was arranged between the pair’s mothers, who were childhood friends. Margarita reportedly outright refused to entertain the possibility as her mourning period hadn't ended and concerns about her two young sons. However, those close to Margarita felt that she instead wished to marry the recently ascended Emperor Nathan IV of Ghant, whom Margarita courted some time before her marriage to Dionysios of Perateia. Ultimately, Nathan began courting Sophia of Dakmoor in mid-2013.

By late summer, Basil, accompanied by his parents, visited Margarita in Cularo. A courtship was eventually announced on 19 May 2013. Margarita visited Aretias on three occasions during the courtship, while Basil primarily resided in Latium during the courtship. The limited nature of Margarita's presence in Aretias leading up to the marriage elicited some negative reactions from high ranking members of court.

As heir apparent, Basil was made an honorary soldier in the 1st Cavalry Regiment. In 2002, he was invested as a Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece by Emperor Jacobus VI/I Claudius according to Perateian custom recognizing the heir apparent.
Their engagement was announced on 18 August 2013 with plans for the wedding to take place in late 2013. Those close to the couple indicated that the marriage contract stipulated a high place at Aretian court for Margarita's two sons, who would reside with her in Chalceritis. Margarita continued to reside in Latium with her sons until late May. The Pinaria family arranged for the wedding to take place at Hagia Euergetou, the traditional site for Imperial Peratene marriages and coronations.
Education
Basil was attended to by various private tutors in lieu of formal education until the age of 10 when he was enrolled at [Gariman boarding school], in [Gariman city]. As a result of his education in Garima and upbringing, Basil is fluent in Gariman. Following the completion of his secondary education in 2006, Basil was enrolled at Academia Militaris Olympia where he underwent military and officer training, and studied political science and economics. In 2007, he dropped the economics focus. He participated in the Transvectio Equitum each year during his time at Olympia. He also participated in polo to fulfill his mandatory extracurricular activities requirement.

Following the completion of his education and military training, Basil was granted the rank of tourmarches by his father and places in command of the Aretian Tourma.
Margarita married Basil on 2 December 2013, at Hagia Euergetou, in Leonople, in a ceremony officiated by Ecumenical Patriarch Leon X. The wedding was attended by prominent figures such as Jacobus VI Claudius and members of the Latin Imperial Family, Peter II of Garima, and Nathan IV of Ghant.

He was appointed to the Royal Council on his 18th birthday, but did not take an active role until 2011. Basil noticeably clashed with Grand Logothete Jovan Gulea, and stopped regularly attending council meetings by 2014.
At Aretian court, Margarita had a reputation for her grace, sense of refinement, and sharp wit, the latter of which caused a series of issues with Basil and other members of court early in the marriage. She recruited a number of Latin noblewomen to serve as her ladies-in-waiting, and only minimally included local noblewomen – of exception was X. Among her closest confidants at court were her cousin and lady-in-waiting Azalais of Turenne-Chamonix, Theodora Rasinia, and her brother-in-law Prince Robert. Margarita was thought of highly by King Andronikos, due in large part to her charming nature and ties to the prominent nobility in Latium and Garima. This was far from the universal opinion of Margarita at court, as she could be droll, amusing and use her wit to joke about others.
Reign
On 2 October 2015, Andronikos II passed away and Basil succeed him as king. His coronation was not held until 9 January 2016, which is one of the longest gaps between an Aretian king's ascension and coronation in peacetime. One of his first acts as king was to sack and replace all ministers on the Royal Council, including Grand Logothete Gulea. Basil appointed Evangelos Avouris, a notable court ally, to lead the council.

In his coronation speech, Basil promised to "eradicate corrupt politicians" and corrupt elements from the country. Despite this, Aretias has seen a rise in corruption since Basil became king according to World Democracy Index. Likewise, he has rolled back many reforms relating to freedom of the press.
They had three children over the course of their marriage. Their first child, Zenobia, was born on 30 October 2014. Zenobia was born alongside a twin brother who did not survive. On 12 October 2016, the couple had their second child, Basilia, known as Beatrice. And their third, Constantia, was born on 1 December 2017.

As consort
On 2 October 2015, Andronikos III passed away, allowing Basil to succeed to the throne and Pinaria became Queen consort. Margarita and Basil were jointly crowned on 9 January 2016. Margarita publicly aired her displeasure with this date on social media and in the press due to it conflicting with the birthday of her son Andreas. However, the coronation and coronation ball were held that night as planned.

Basil's reign has been fraught with issues arising out of his personal life. His first marriage to Margarita Pinaria was source of many domestic and foreign relations issues due to her local charity and domestic popularity, as well as prominent foreign ties. He had been previously accused of imprisoning her prior to her departure and their eventual divorce. The collapse of their relationship, as well as Margarita's eventual return to Latium prompted concerns of a possible invasion when Basil refused to consent a divorce. Even with Basil's decision to agree to a divorce, the fears of an invasion did not subside and Aretias has continued to reform its military and purchase additional weapons.
Margarita made a high number of public appearances, official or otherwise, during the first years as consort. This was a continuation of her activities as crown princess, where she regularly visited and shopped at local markets, meeting and interacting with the citizenry.
Relationships and marriages
Marriage to Margarita Pinaria
In late 2012, the Aretian royal household first contacted the Pinaria family to discuss a courtship and possible marriage negotiation between Basil and Margarita Pinaria. Margarita reportedly outright refused to entertain the possibility as her mourning period for her first husband hadn't ended and concerns about the position of her son. However, those close to Margarita felt that she instead wished to marry the recently ascended Nathan IV of Ghant, whom Margarita was involved with some time before her marriage to Dionysios of Perateia.

By late summer, Basil and his parents visited Margarita at the Pinaria family's ancestral estate outside of Cularo, Latium. A courtship was eventually announced on 19 May 2013. Basil primarily resided in Latium throughout the courtship and visited court with relatively frequency. However, his lack of appearances with Margarita in Aretias prompted concern among the local nobility.
In 2016, she established the Pinaria School (Pinaria Scholí), in Chalceritis, which operates primary, secondary, and special education, along with post-education literacy classes for women. It is the only school in Aretias that is affiliated with the Catholic Church. In 2021, the school began to receive grants from the Catholic Church. Margarita has served as a member of the school's board of directors since its establishment.
Breakdown of relationship
Rumors of a breakdown in the royal couple's relationship first arose following the birth of Zenobia. Basil was displeased at the death of their son during childbirth and according to courtiers blamed both Margarita and Zenobia. Their relationship continued to deteriorate as Basil became king, and his infidelities became more prominent. In November 2015, Latin media outlets first reported on an affair involving Basil and [Perateian noblewoman] that produced an illegitimate daughter. The report was eventually quashed by an imperial orders in Latium and Perateia but continued to be reported elsewhere.

Basil's engagement to Margarita was announced on 18 August 2013 with plans for the wedding to take place in late 2013. The marriage contract stipulated a prominent place at court for Margarita's sons from her previous marriage, and allowed for them to live with her in Basilakia. Margarita continued to reside in Latium with her son until late May before she relocated to Aretias. The Pinaria family arranged for the wedding to take place at Hagia Euergetou, the traditional site for Imperial Peratene marriages and coronations.
The issues between the royal couple continued to worsen after Basil’s coronation was scheduled for January 9, the birthday of Margarita’s son. While there were few issues during the coronation itself, the coronation ball was the first instance of a visible disagreement between Basil and Margarita. However, Margarita was close to Basil throughout the early hours of the festivities, and according to guests Basil appeared aggressive, inebriated, and overbearing.

Basil and Margarita married on 2 December 2013, at Hagia Euergetou, in Leonople. The ceremony was presided over by Ecumenical Patriarch Leon X.
In June 2016, Basil ordered Margarita's sons away from court and returned to Latium immediately. Margarita was then separated from her sons, who relocated to Leonople where they resided with their uncle Alexius at the court of then junior emperor Constantine XX Claudius. Margarita continued to regularly visit her sons in Leonople until December 2016. During this period, she continued to make public appearances in Aretias and accompanied Basil on foreign visits.
Annulment
In late 2016, yet another affair involving Basil was reported on by Perateian-based media, as were reports that Basil was engaged in an affair with Margarita’s lady-in-waiting TBD. Despite a public denial, TBD was dismissed by Margarita but did not immediately return to Latium. Margarita disappeared from public life in February 2017. She was not seen again until just after midnight on 8 March 2018, when she entered Heraion in Leonople, accompanied by her three daughters. Basil issued a missive to Emperor Constantine the following day, where he accused Constantine of abducting and seducing Margarita and demanded the return of Margarita and their children.

Margarita retained legal counsel who then announced that a petition for divorce to was submitted to Ecumenical Patriarch Georgios X, as the marriage was performed by the previous Ecumenical Patriarch. Basil formally objected to Georgios X holding any authority to grant a divorce, but the process was expedited at the apparent request of Emperor Constantine, who had recently overseen the Patriarch's installation a year prior. Basil subsequently accused Constantine of attempting to force an divorce so he could marry Margarita, despite himself being engaged to Alazne Dain. Constantine's imperial office issued a statement explaining that the "Emperor [] is ensuring the safety and well-being of a citizen in need, as is the duty of the true Christian Emperor."
Separation and divorce
Rumors of a breakdown in Basil and Margarita's relationship first arose following the birth of Zenobia. According to first hand accounts, Basil was displeased at the death of their son during childbirth and blamed both Margarita and Zenobia. Later that year, as Basil became Despot, Margarita later accused him of purposefully selecting the coronation date on her oldest son's birthday out of spite. At the coronation ball later that night, Basil was prominently seen accompanied by a number of other women and left the ball without Margarita.

The relationship continued to deteriorate into 2015 when Latin media outlets first reported on a number of affairs. In early 2016, Basil banned Margarita's son Andreas of Perateia from court and the country. Margarita regularly visited her son in nearby Leonople causing greater issues in the relationship until August 2016 when her visits ceased.
Despite the public battle surrounding a divorce, a number of other royal houses and governments announced their displeasure at Margarita's treatment and offered their support. Fearing the potential backlash, Basil was convinced by relatives to enter into negotiations with Margarita and her family regarding a divorce. The petition was later amended and accused Basil of one nullity, that of breach of future condition in which Basil agreed to allow Margarita to keep her two sons from a prior marriage with her at court without interference. There was no nullity submitted on the basis of infidelity. The divorce was finalized on 2 September 2018, and was followed by a royal decree that recognized Basil and Margarita's eldest daughter Zenobia as the continued heir to the Aretian throne, and granted her the style of Apostolic Highness and the title of Crown Princess and the rank of Sebastokratorissa, which was subsequently confirmed by Emperor Constantine XX according to Perateian custom.

In early 2016, yet another affair involving Basil was reported on by Perateian media, as were reports that an illegitimate child was born to Basil by an unnamed mistress. While the reports of an illegitimate child were later proved to be unfounded, the woman was reported to be X, a lady-in-waiting to Margarita that was dismissed in March. Margarita subsequently disappeared from public life in February 2017. She was not seen again in public until she was reported in Leonople on 8 October 2017. Basil issued a missive to Emperor Constantine, where Basil accused Constantine of abduction, and demanded the return of Margarita and their children.
A Catholic annulment was later granted to Margarita by Pope Urban IX on 18 October 2018, allowing Margarita to remarry in the Catholic Church.
Other relationships
Prior to her marriage to Dionysios, Pinaria was in a relationship with Nathan IV of Ghant. The two did not publicly court, but were often in each other's company during mid 2007 while Margarita was a student at City College of Velia. The relationship ended due to Margarita's frustration with Nathan's lack of commitment according to courtiers in Ghish; however, others contended that she was simultaneously in a relationship with Dionysios. Nonetheless, Margarita began courting Dionysios two months later and ceased visiting Ghish soon after.

Margarita retained legal counsel who then announced that a divorce petition to was submitted to Ecumenical Patriarch Georgios X, as the marriage was performed by the Ecumenical Patriarch. Basil formally objected to Georgios X holding any authority to grant an annulment, but the process was expedited at the apparent request of Emperor Constantine, who had recently overseen the Patriarch's installation a year prior. Basil subsequently accused Constantine of attempting to force an annulment so he could marry Margarita himself; however, Constantine's imperial office issued a statement explaining that the "Emperor [] is ensuring the safety and well-being of a Latin citizen in need, as is the duty of the true Christian Emperor."
Following her divorce, Pinaria returned to Latium with her son by Dionysios and four daughters by Basil IV. By fall 2018, Margarita was linked to Thomas of Ossonoba, son and heir to then Master of Offices Nicephorus, Duke of Ossonoba. The two were frequently spotted together in Castellum, or at imperial sponsored events. Pinaria rejected Ossonoba's public proposal at [event]. The relationship continued for another month, but ended after Thomas was frequently seen with Ghantish noblewoman Layla Lianu.
Personal life
Since the end of her marriage to Basil IV, Margarita has received a biannual stipend to care for her three daughters. Margarita also receives a stipend from Latin court and her late first husband's military pension. She was granted an apartment at Velia House upon her return to Latium by Constantine XX Claudius, which has served as her primary residence since July 2018.

Despite the public battle surrounding an annulment, a number of other monarchies issued their displeasure at Margarita's treatment and offered their public support to her, most notably Turenese electoral family. Fearing the potential backlash, Basil was convinced to enter into negotiations with Margarita and her family regarding a divorce. The terms of the divorce and allegations are not known. The divorce was granted on 2 September 2018, and was followed by a royal decree that recognized Basil and Margarita's eldest daughter Zenobia as the continued heir to the Aretian throne, and granted her the style of Apostolic Highness and the traditional title of the heir apparent Sebastokratorissa and Crown Princess.

Despite regularly visiting Castellum to see extended family, Margarita did not move to the capital until the age of 9 when her family took up residence at Collidomus, an aristocratic townhouse owned by the Pinaria family.

In 2011, Margarita earned a degree in Theater, Dance, & Media, also taking courses in Film and Visual Studies. While at Alba College, she participated in Theater Club, and participated in numerous productions, including Cruenta Maria and Pavor.

Marriage to Dionysios of Perateia

On 10 August 2009, at 19 years old, she married Dionysios of Perateia who at the time was the heir apparent to the Despot of Euneos. The pair were introduced by Dionysios’ sister Anna, who was a classmate of Margarita’s at Caelimontium-Saint Sophia Ladies College. The marriage was brief, but happy. Their first child, Andreas, was born on 9 January 2010. The couple primarily resided in Castellum throughout their marriage as Margarita was studying at Alba College despite her husband’s active deployment in the Perateian Imperial Army.

Aretias

Margarita made a high number of public appearances, official or otherwise, during the first years as consort. This was a continuation of her activities as crown princess, where she regularly visited and shopped at local markets, meeting and interacting with the citizenry.
