For most of his career, Pires served as lead of the Social Democrats. Early on he was a member of the [[Euclean Paretian Social Democratic Party]], he later founded the Social Democratic Unity Party, which united with other left-wing parties to form the Social Democrats. He would take a hiatus from leadership from 1981 to 1985, with his two deputies serving as leaders during this time, the SD would be a member of the coalition government of [[Manuela Morais]].
