Xotlatozca was know by the epithet ''Moyocoyani'' ("creator of himself"), a manifestation of heavenly fire represented by the sun in the sky which would symbolically die every night and recreate itself every morning. This is thought to have facilitated the assimilation of other gods and belief systems into the Xotlatozca-centric Cozauist religion, associating local deities and spirits with the central god of the Temple without contradicting the established doctrine.
