Vistulzka (Vistulzkan: Wiślańska), officially the Orthodox Republic of Vistulzka (Vistulzkan: Prawosławna Republika Wiślańska) and often times simply called the Orthodox Republic, is a sovereign country located in Western Calesia. Consisting of 54 states called Voivodeships, it is the third-largest country in Calesia, covering over 396,297 km2, and the fourth-most populous with over X million inhabitants. Additionally, Vistulzka holds two island overseas territories within Galania: Casimir and Nowa Sarmat.

Vistulzka has been inhabited since the Last Glacial Age with various sets of artifacts dating back to the Lower Paleolithic period when the area was dominated by various hunter-gatherers cultures. Vistulzka in late antiquity was inhabited by a mix of tribes, known as the Proto-Sarmats. By the time of the 800s, the area of Vistulzka was controlled by three various paganistic duchies: Sarmat, Géza and the Pereya. The Duke of Sarmat, Casimir III converted to Presterist Gregorianism and engaged in the Sarmat Wars, uniting part of the Duchy of Géza and absorbing the entirity of the Duchy of Pereya. The remaining parts of the Duchy of Géza became the First Kingdom of Hetumoger, under the banner of the Presterist Gregorianism. The Duchy of Sarmat became the dominant power in Western Calesia.

In 953, the Duchy of Sarmat and the First Kingdom of Hetumoger unified, creating the Sarmat-Hetumoger Kingdom. In 1211, Sarmat-Hetumoger entered the First Odrodzenie, a revolutionary cultural movement that coincided with a change of internal politics of the Kingdom. This change was uniquely liberal, where the power of the Kingdom would reorganize under the principles of humanism and transformed into the Vistulzka-Hetumoger Noble Republic. The new political system utilized the idea of a Noble Republic and promulgated the Calesia's first constitution. The Noble Republic would later collapse due to political disalignment between Viztulzka and Hetumoger. This period created separate noble classes unique to their cultural alignment, the Nemesseg, the Szlachta and the Lytsari.

Etymology

History

Antiquity

Vistulzka has been inhabited since the Stone Age by modern homo sapiens with archaic tools and artifacts being dates as far back as 20,000 years ago. It is believed that while Vistulzka alongside some neighboring countries have been inhabited since the Last Glacial Period, the climate conditions made the area inhospitable to permanent habitats. Archaic humans are believed to have began permanently settle Vistulzka in the 11,000 years ago with the rise of the neolithic Wełnica culture. Agricultural prospects in the area were meddling and as such, Vistulzka did not see any form of agriculture until 5,000 years ago. Before that, Vistulzka was dominated by various hunter-gatherer societies.

Agriculture and more formative tribal identities emerged in around 4,000 years ago where tools suitable for agriculture emerged. Wełnican tribes and settlements were aware of the Hernician Empire, and several settlements were on the Minervan Trail that crossed through Western Calesia from Central Calesia. Unlike the hostile tribes that inhabited Cheruscia in modern day X, X; the Wełnica openly traded with the Hernicians.

Three Duchies and Gregorianism

In the 9th century, three major powers emerged in modern-day Vistulzka: the Duchy of Wełnica, the Duchy of Sarmat and the Duchy of Mazowszanie. All three of these duchies were paganistic in nature and tended to enter into small wars with each other in the Three Duchy Wars. The three duchies followed Western Calesian paganism until 851 where the breakup of the First X Empire began. During the breakup, Gregorianism entered the region through refugees fleeing the Second Duchy of Vossenburg into Wełnica. The Duke of Sarmat, Ziemomysł I converted to Gregorianism and sought to unite the other two paganistic countries under his banner. The Duchy of Sarmat and the Duchy of Wełnica unified into the Grand Duchy of Sarmat after a peace treaty was signed between Ziemomysł I and Mieszko II of Wełnica, the Duke of Wełnica, in 922.

The Duchy of Mazowszanie initially rebuked the idea of conversion. TBD

Geography

Vistulzka is located in Western Calesia, bordered by the countries of X (X km; X mi) to the east, X (X km; X mi) to the west, and X (X km; X mi) to the southwest and south. Vistulzka is the single largest country within Western Calesia and the third-largest country in Calesia proper.

Government

The Orthodox Republic of Vistulzka is a unitary semi-presidential republic that is governed on the basis of multi-party democracy that utilizes a "Common Government", a form of government that emerged during the Atalan Political Heropleven. Its government is codified by the 1921 constitution which is considered to be the governing principle and establishing document of Vistulzka. Vistulzka's government takes several ideas from Orthodoxist Republicanism, one of the many new political ideas formed during the Political Heropleven. Vistulzka utilizes three branches of government, both "separate but intertwined" government where all branches of the government were intertwined with each other.

Officially, the Office of the President is elected within the Sejm, where the members of the Sjem elect members of their own. The powers of the president are executive in nature and are split between the office and the Sjem. The office of the President is designed by the 1921 constitution to be the simultaneous head of state and head of government, and is reponsible for the the appointment of the Marshal and the Ducal Council, the executive branch's cabinet. The Marshal and the Ducal Council are responsible to answering to daily affairs to the Sjem. The President of Vistulzka is considered to have a more ceremonial role if the Marshal and the Ducal Council are able to function and hold support within the Sjem. However, if the Sjem initiates a censure vote, the powers of the Marshal and the Ducal Council are significantly diminished. Under this, the Sjem can create a Council of Confidence which will vacate the office of the Marshal and place those responsibilities on the Ducal Council.

Vistulzka has historically been a hotbed for political organizations with three parties making up the dominant block since 1925. The New Republican Coalition (NKR) have ruled Vistulzka since the end of the Second Cuthish War, and is comprised of three dominant parties: the Orthodoxist Republican Party (PPR), the Janssian-Orange Republican Party (PRJP) and the Blue Movement Party (PBR). All three of these parties were founded in the immediate aftermath of the Recession of 1924.
