The modern Kingdom of Mysia was first ruled by the House of Kamytzes, descending from David Kamytzes, Despot of Mysia. Kamytzes son, Constantine Kamytzes, held the distinction as Despot of Mysia during the Vardana-Lihnidos personal union, and upon its dissolution proclaimed himself Basileus of Vardana, Basileus of Mysia, and Emperor of Lihnidos based on rule in Mysia and descent from Basileus Manuel II. The rule of the House of Kamytzes ended in 1901 during the reign of Basileus George I, when the kingdom was absorbed into the Hazaraspid Kingdom of Vardana.

Mysia again asserted its independence in 1924, during the Vardanan revolution. Prince Basil Bznuni asserted the claim of his wife, Princess Irene of Mysia. From 1924 until 1934, the second Kingdom of Mysia controlled much of what is now the Vardanan province of Mysia, including Aretias where Basil Bznuni previously ruled.

Aretias utilizes male-preference primogeniture, with additional mechanisms allowing the current Sovereign to appoint his or her heir apparent. Under the Kingdom of Mysia, Aretias succession laws were strictly male-only, however the reign of Basilissa Irene I due to her claim to Mysia. Aretias and Mysia entered a union with matching succession laws, which constitutionally exists to this day. Additionally, the Sovereign may appoint his successor in certain instances, such as a lack of children from his primary marriage. As Vardanan customary law permits a man to have multiple wives, a Sovereign may appoint a son from a secondary wife as heir apparent if he lacks male issue from his primary wife – this has happened on one instance, when Basileus Isaac I appointed his son by a concubine, the future Basileus George III, his heir apparent in 1973. Generally, succession laws include the minimum requirements of adhering to Apostolic Christianity, legitimate birth, and Soveriegn consent to marriages. Per a 2016 declaration from Basileus Basil II, his only daughter, Zenobia, Despoina of Mysia, is heir to the Aretian throne unless the birth of a legitimate son displaces her.
