The Third Collectivist-Imperial War was a major interstellar conflict fought from 2920 UE/310 PR to 2928 UE/318 PR, between the Imperial Vaald Duumverate and Union of Collectivist Systems. It is also known in the Empire as the War of Retribution, and in the Collectivist Union as the TBA. It followed two other Collectivist-Imperial Wars, the first being known as the Contact War which was fought from 1136 to 1157 UE, and was at the time the most destructive war either the Collectivist Union or Vaald Duumverate had seen, with over 40 million casualties in total, and much of both Imperial and Collectivist space devastated.

The war began after a confrontation in the border zone of Vaald space became violent, a small retinue of Collectivist ships were transporting an Imperial defector after infiltrating an Imperial Starbase. A fleet of Imperial border guards intercepted the Collectivist fleet, and after a brief altercation the Collectivist fleet was destroyed, and Imperial diplomats demanded recompense for the violation of their space. Soon afterwards the Imperial Duumverate declared war, and two fleets of the Imperial Star Navy converged onto Collectivist space.
