Parliamentary elections were held in Sovar on July 15 2017. The election was to coincide with the first round of the 2017 Sovarese Presidential election. The ruling Progressive Party lost 12 seats and experienced their worst defeat since 1987. The Republican Party gained 12 seats and increased their vote share by 20%. The Socialist Party experienced their worst drop in support ever and lost 1 seat. The Green Party gained one seat and increased their vote share by 0.5%.
In the aftermath of the election Jallur Jakupsson, the leader of the Republican party, became Prime Minister of Sovar. Var Jogvansdóttir, the outgoing Prime Minister and leader of the Progressive Party resigned as party leader on July 16 and resigned from the Tjóðsambinding in 2019 prompting the 2019 North Lagurstad by-election.
The election saw the lowest turnout of any General Election in Sovarese history with only 52.5% of eligible voters casting ballots.
