In 2002, this number was increased to 8, and the new class was confirmed to be a {{wp|cruiser}} rather than a {{wp|destroyer}}.
The Hyō class is fundamentally an improved and scaled-up version of the [[Okami-class destroyer]]s. The class features large accommodation and the ships are capable of flexible operation. One of the most obvious changes is an additional hangar to carry up to one helicopter.
