The 1997 Besmenian presidential election took place on 23 February 1997 and on 9 March 1997 in Besmenia. President Otto Schulz, who has been in office since 1985, was not allowed to stand for a second re-election.

The winner of the election was the former Federal Foreign Minister and Secretary-General of the ANS Gerhard Mahler, who remained President until 2003.
