Lavala is the largest city in the Kathic Pronvince of Maszale. With over 600,000 residents, and over 4,000,000 people in it's metropolitan area, it is the 4th largest city in Kathia.
Etymology
History
Early History
The area was settled orignally by Celtic peoples, until their eventual conquest by the Elyrians around 50 BCE. A settlement or outpost was established in the area by the Elyrians. This settlement has not been found, but it is described in old Elyrian military documents found near Narvona. The city is mentioned again, near it's current location, in 12 AD by scripts of a Valerii soldier. The city for much of it's continued history in the late Classical Period and Medieval Period remained small. It was listed as a "small village" by the Kingdom in 1257, with an established population of a few hundred (about 100-250).
Under the Kingdom of Kathia
The area was conquered by the Kingdom of Kathia in 1291.
Revolutionary Period
Early Modern and Contemporary Period
The western half of the city was left in mostly ruin after the Hatheronic Wars. This caused an acute housing shortage, and man people left the city for places such as Ravonne, Curkala, or Monatava. The city would see a decline in the 1820s, but by the 1840s, it was growing at a rapid pace with the advent of railroads and world shipping. Due to it's proximity to the coast (16km inland), a port was established. The city also established a large rail yard, which remains the second largest in Kathia. As the 20th century approached, growth slowed. Being far from either border, the city was not effected by the the First World War. However, the interwar period saw many industries leave the city for central Kathia and Eastern Kathia. During the war, the western half of the city was once again in ruin, as it contained almost all the industry such as arms and a tank factory. During the Battle of Ethal in mid 1944, Kathic troops, with help from the Resistance, recaptured the city.
In the post-war economy, the city nearly tripled it's population and size. Aided with the automobile and mass public transit, and the construction of the Ethal Metro in the 1950s, the city took on it's modern, sprawling shape. The city attracted many businesses, including that of the aerospace and petroleum industries. The inter-Auroran Aircraft manufacture Airbus built and maintains it's main factory at the Ethal-Kævenac Airport. The western area was cleared of rubble, and established a business district that remains the 3rd largest in Kathia.
Lavala is currently a large technological, aeronautical, and manufacturing hub.
Economy
The economy of Lavala is primarily driven by tech companies, aerospace, and the Government. The city generates about $159 billion in 2016, about half of the total economic output of the province. A large portion of the cities workers work in the service industry. It has become a large banking center, though it is still dwarfed by the banking services in Monitava and Ravona. The government employed about 50,000 people in Lavala. Other large employers include KAETAC, Elyrdea, TAMAK, Pentac, and Volvo. The city has seen large investments since the 1970s by Kathics and investors from around the world.
Beginning in the 1960s, tourism has played a major part in the economy. Numerous museums and tourist attractions were founded between 1960 and the present day. About 1.7 million visited the city in 2014. Major attractions include the various beaches and amusmant parks in the city, as well as the many museums and historical attractions in the city.
There is a large development of IT companies in the north west between Ethal-Landac and Ethal in an area known as Kalac. Known as the "Kalac Corridor" it is home to many private IT companies and start ups. A similar area can be found in Ravona and Monatava, as well as Rakila.
Climate
Lavala lies entirely in the mediterranean climate zone. With an average temperature of 73 degrees, Lavala is said to have one of the nicest climates in Kathia. Temperatures usually get as low as the mid 30s (F) in the winter and will usually stay between 70-80F in the summer. The hottest recorded temperature was 111.2F on July 28, 1977. The coldest recorded temperature was -2F recorded on March 1, 1938. Due the the climate, the area is able to grow non-native palms and other plants that require such year-round warmth.

Transportation
Lavala has an extensive public transport system in and around the downtown area. The metro is accessible to approximately 1 million people. The bus system covers almost the entire metropolitan area. The city receives several daily trains from in and around Kathia. Due to it's position, it is a major logistics hub in Kathia and Aurora.Metro
Work on the Lavala Metro began in 1950, and by 1954 the first line was complete. Today, there are 5 lines with over 100 stations. In 2013, the Metro carried over 258 million passengers. The metro is also linked the the outer rail system. The national rail system also has many lines leading in and out of the city, and daily high-speed TGV services also operate into the city. In 2012, over 358 million passengers passing through the station that year.
Autoroutes
Along with and extensive rail network, there is also a large highway network in the city. Maszale started constructing highways in the 1950s, along with other provinces of Kathia and Aurora in general with the post-war economic boom. Ethal has more limited-access highways per person than any other city in Kathia. Many have blamed this for the excessive sprawl of the city. Autoroute 221 circles the city, with various Autoroutes leading out of the city. The A20 Autoroute is one of the busiest in Aurora. It travels from Lavala to Ravona. The A52 is another busy Autoroute from Ethal to Monitava.
Airports
The city also has two major airports, Lavala-Landac and Lavala-Kævenac. Lavala-Landac is the busiest of the two airports, with 25 million passengers in 2016. Lavala-Kævenac is the second largest, and contains the Airbus factory. 3 million passengers passed through Lavala-Kævenac in 2016.
Bicycles
In 2007, bike lanes were introduced in Ethal and have a remained popular form of travel in downtown Lavala. They are common in the older sections of the city, due to the narrow streets and alleyways.
Streetcar
In May 2016, a single streetcar line was opened in the business district. Plans have been made to extend the line since then. A new line is set to open before 2025. The line carried it's 1 millionth passenger by August that year.
Neighborhoods
Most neighborhoods in Lavala are new, compared to those of Ravona and Varsava, the two major "old cities". The city is very spread out compared to the rest of the country. With single-family homes, it is often compared to North America. Closer to the city center however, people live in apartments blocks or condominiums. A large portion of the city lives between downtown Lavala and Varena Beach. However, since the 1990s the north around Acaeva has seen exponential growth. Most suburban homes are large compared to the rest of suburban Aurora.
