The Duke of Adrianople is a duchy in Latium held by the Head of the House of Claudius. Historically, the title refers to a collection of monarchs and later dukes that reigned over Adrianople and parts of western Latium as independent rulers from 1059 until 1428 when the kingdom was reintegrated into the united Latin Empire. The Kingdom of Adrianople is a historiographical term created after the existence of the realm to differentiate it from what is recognized as the Latin Empire. At its largest territorial extent, the Emperors in Adrianople controlled much of western and southwestern Latium, including Iasonia, Utica, Aarhusium and Rutupiae. Adrianople controlled most of the territory composing the modern-day border region with Lyncanestria, including the counties of Gelonia and Olybrium, from 1059 until 1149. The early dominance of Adrianople over Latium is often attributed the reinforcement levies from western Latium proper never reaching Aulia.

The sovereignty of Adrianople's monarchs came to an end on 28 November 1489, when Michael I (Michael VI as Latin pretender) was defeated in battle outside of the modern-day city of Colonia Julia. Michael sued for peace, relinquished his claims on the Latin throne, and submitted to Emperor Theodorus I. While Michael still held control over a sizable amount of territory, he was enabled to retain his non-imperial titles and swore fealty to Theodorus I as the 13th Duke of Adrianople.
The sovereignty of Adrianople's monarchs came to an end on 28 November 1489, when Constantine IV (Constantine XVIII as Latin pretender) was defeated in battle outside of the modern-day city of Colonia Julia. Constantine IV sued for peace, relinquished his claims on the Latin throne, and submitted to Emperor Theodosius IX Aemilius, who allowed him to retain Adrianople and hold the title of Duke of Adrianople

Succession
Succession
Succession to the Duchy of Adrianople follows the line of the Head of the House of Claudius, per a 1997 decree issued by Emperor Jason VI. The Duchy and house leadership descend according to male-preference primogeniture, originally from Latin Emperor Iovinus. The 1997 decree delineated the immediate line of descent from Jason V, Duke of Adrianople according to the principles of male-preference primogeniture. Though not typical in male-preference primogeniture, a female may be Duchess of Adrianople and Head of the House in her own right, but not pass such titles to her children, unless her husband is also of the House of Claudius. As such, females are excluded from succession upon their marriage to a non-Claudii. Additionally, the Head of the House is Duke of Tolosa in the right of Garza, however this title follows male-only succession. It has been held by every head of the house since 1049, except for on one occasion. This has occurred on one occasion, when Maria I, Duchess of Adrianople married her uncle Philip I Claudius, Duke of Tolosa, and the titles re-merged with the tenure of their oldest son John II, Duke of Adrianople.

Throughout the entire 285 year existence of the realm, the Claudii rulers of Adrianople claimed to be the rightful Latin Emperors, due to the first king's status as the youngest son of Empress Maria I Claudia and Ascanius II Claudius.

Emperors in Adrianople

Throughout the course of the Sovereignty of Adrianople, the Claudian rulers continued to assert their status as the rightful Latin emperors in an unbroken line from Constantine V Claudius, who took the purple in 577. When receiving, or entertaining, dignitaries or other nobles, the Claudii Emperors in Adrianople retained the traditional sytle of "Caesar" with the chief among his titles being "Latin Emperor" The Claudii rulers of Adrianople claimed the following Imperial titles:

His Imperial Majesty, the Most Sacred and Christian, Most Pious and Blessed, Most Serene and Noble Augustus, Unconquered and Universal Emperor, King of the Albans, and of the Sabines, Lord of the World, Father of the Fatherland, First Citizen of Senate, Companion of Christ, Equal to the Apostles, and Sword of Christ.

In addition the Emperor in Adrianople was also the Duke of Adrianople, which is the official reference for the Adrianople rulers among Latin Imperial records of the era.

Succession

Succession to the Duchy of Adrianople follows the line of the Head of the House of Claudius, per a 1997 decree issued by Emperor Jacobus VI. The Duchy and house leadership descend according to male-preference primogeniture, originally from Latin Emperor Constantine V. The 1997 decree delineated the immediate line of descent from Jacobus V, Duke of Adrianople according to the principles of male-preference primogeniture. Though atypical in male-preference primogeniture, a female may be Duchess of Adrianople and Head of the House in her own right, but not pass such titles to her children, unless her husband is also of the House of Claudius. As such, females are excluded from succession upon their marriage to a dynast.
