The CGTR–ATSF merger was the result of the purchase of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway from Santa Fe Industries by the Gateway Turtle Corporation in 1978. This purchase would be reflected by the Gateway Turtle Corporation's rebranding to the Gateway Turtle & Santa Fe Company, which would follow immediately after. The relatively short-lived consolidation of the Santa Fe Railway with the Central Gateway Turtle Railroad that would come from this would come to an end only five years later, when Santa Fe Industries would merge with the Southern Pacific Transportation Company and buy back Santa Fe to form the SPSF Railway.
