The 2001 Tevitheimer grand chancellery election was the seventh sextennial grand chancellery election in Tevitheim. Unlike previous Tevitheimer elections, which usually consisted of two primary candidates, the 2001 election had four contenders for the grand chancellery; Jarl of Brendanland Aaron Edwards of the Social Union, Vice Chancellor Joakim Sunde of the Republican Party, law professor Paal Zhang of the newly founded Liberal Democratic Party, and independent businessman from Ditka Vernik Hjertsson. Because none of the candidates for grand chancellor garnered a majority of electoral votes, the Alnating was entitled to select the grand chancellor (with each jarldom casting one vote). After 36 ballots of deadlock, Hjertsson and Edwards threw their support behind Zhang, who was elected grand chancellor. Zhang was the first ever Chinese person elected grand chancellor.
The 1995 Tevitheimer grand chancellery election was the sixth sextennial grand chancellery election in Tevitheim. The Republican ticket of Jarl of New Hammerfest Aleksander Goreson and Alnatingsrepresentant of Rookeryet Joakim Sunde defeated the Social Union ticket and incumbent Vice Chancellor Jonas Støre of New Tremblant and Councilor to the People from Ilbahar Vulkan Mortison in the election, which was held 6 February 1995. It is the first of two Tevitheimer grand chancellery elections, along with the 2001 election, in which the winning candidate lost the popular vote, and is considered the first of the "Disasterous Three" elections that played a major role in Tevitheimer electoral reform.

Edwards won most of the interior and south of Tevitheim and split New Trondheim with Sunde, who also won the northern jarldoms. Hjertsson won several western jarldoms, and Zhang was popular in the jarldoms with high amounts of Chinese voters. Edwards won a plurality of the electoral vote while Sunde won a plurality of the popular vote. Zhang came in third place for electoral votes and fourth in the popular vote while Hjertsson won third in popular vote but fourth in electoral vote. Thus, Hjertsson was eliminated from the contingent election, though some members of the Alnating from jarldoms which voted for Hjertsson were able to keep their jarldoms from casting votes for Edwards. After 36 ballots Edwards and Hjertsson asked their supporters to vote for Zhang, who was elected on the 37th ballot.
Incumbent Social Union Grand Chancellor James Clinton was ineligible to seek a second term because of term limits established in the Tevitheimer Constitution. Incumbent Vice Chancellor Goreson was able to easily secure the Social Union nomination with no major competition at the convention. He selected Councilor Vulkan Mortison of Ditka as his running mate. Goreson was considered an early favorite for the Republican nomination, anf after a contentious convention battle with Alnatingsrepresentant Joakim Sunde, who later became his running mate for the general election.

This is one of only two elections to be decided by the Alnating, the other being the 1959 Tevitheimer Grand Chancellery Election. Due to the controversy of this election, the contingency process was eliminated in 2005 in favor of a two-round system. Zhang's 19.77% represents the lowest ever percentage won by someone who was elected grand chancellor (though Raimundo won 8.97% in 2007, she ascended to the grand chancellery due to the resignation of both officials before her in the line of succession). Zhang's election marks the only time a member of a party that was neither the Social Union or Republican parties won the grand chancellery in a popular vote without being the incumbent grand chancellor. This was the first election where the combined territories and Prospekt were able to cast electoral votes.
Both major-party candidates focused primarily on domestic issues, such as the newly balanced budget, reconstruction after the Third Great War, tax policy, and Clinton's reform of the civil service, although foreign policy and the potential of war in Haganland were important issues as well. Despite Grand Chancellor James Clinton's popularity, Støre avoided campaigning with Clinton due to criticisms from Goreson that Støre was a puppet of Clinton.

The election was not decided until several weeks after the election with the electoral votes of the jarldom of Måkeøyene being undecided. Initial returns showed a victory for Støre but an automatic recount prevented Støre from being able to declare victory. A three week-long series of recounts led to Goreson winning by 3,232 votes out of over 3 million cast, a margin of less than 0.1% of the total vote in Måkeøyene. A similar situation occurred with the 11,100 votes in New Tremblant that decided the jarldom for Goreson. The combination of these two jarldoms was enough to sway the The recount and Goreson's victory despite losing the national popular vote was controversial and remains a source of controversy. Ultimately, Goreson won 186 electoral votes to Støre's 141 electoral votes with a combined margin of just over 14,000 votes deciding the election as a whole. This gave Goreson a victory in the electoral vote despite Støre winning the popular vote by 1.4 million, or 1.56% of all votes cast. This was the last election where Prospekt was a territory and not a full jarldom and the last election in which territories did not cast votes for grand chancellor.

Goreson was considered an early favorite for the Republican nomination, anf after a contentious convention battle with Alnatingsrepresentant' Joakim Sunde, who later became his running mate for the general election.
