The Gassasinian National Police is the national civilian police force of Gassasinia, responsible for usual police fighting crime, maintaining public safety and order, investigating and tacking criminal groups throughout Gassasinia, along with protection of the constitution and its' values, counter-terrorism and monitoring of extremist political groups. Formed in 1978 by the National Police Act, the National Police was formed to be a new impartial and reformed police force, integrating controversial affirmative action policies to help alleviate the dominance of [CHRISTIAN]s amongst the ranks of the police, while disassociating itself from the repression of the Royal Police, who during the civil war had endorsed and maintained several far-right paramilitaries.

Although today there is a disproportionate amount of [CHRISTIAN] officers amongst the ranks of the National Police - especially in the upper echelons - [CHRISTIAN]s only make up about 45% of the National Police's manpower, whereas as much as 75% of the officers of the old Royal Police were [CHRISTIAN]s at the time of its' disbanding.

While generally known to be a fair and professional force - especially by the standards of the [MIDDLE EAST] - there are concerns about funding. While most Muslim citizens of Gassasinia nowadays generally report mostly positive interactions with the National Police, reports of abuse directed towards [MUSLIM]s is are not unheard of, especially in the earlier days of the force. Such reports are handled by the Parliamentary Commission on Police Conduct, whose duties are to ensure and enforce a strong degree of professional standards and respect of rights within the police.

Another controversial aspect of the National Police is the Constitutional Protection Department, a special intelligence department of the National Police responsible for monitoring political and religious extremists who threaten the stability and integrity of Gassasinia and its' liberal democratic constitution. In particular, the Constitutional Protection Department has been accused of in particular harassing conservative-minded citizens of politicians and obstructing their freedom of speech and political affiliation.

Uniforms

The standard uniform of the National Police consists of a baby blue breathable cotton shirt worn with a black bulletproof vest and trousers, black unbloused boots, along with a webbing material duty belt upon which the police officer generally carries two pairs of handcuffs, a baton, his handgun, two magazines and a personal radio, along with other personal equipment. Each officer wears either a black peaked cap or a bowler hat featuring blue and red chequering around the brim, and women have the option of a white headscarf for religious purposes. On either shoulder-loop of the shirt there are a pair of black epaulettes which have the rank insignia and officer number, along with rank chevrons on the right shoulder, along with the insignia of the GNP on the left shoulder. This rank insignia and officer number is also displayed on the right breast of the shirt, and similarly in the same place on the bulletproof vest.

For cold weather, officers are issued a dark navy blue hooded parka, which is worn over the shirt and bulletproof vest. The back of the coat reads "NATIONAL POLICE شرطة وطنية" in bold red lettering. Additionally, in more moderate colder climates, officers are issued with a dark navy blue woolly-pully type jumper, with similar sewn-in insignia, markings and identification to the shirt.

This uniform replaced the old Royal Police uniform, which was originally entirely dark navy coloured with a blue beret, which was felt to be way too militaristic and threatening. To help improve the image of the new National Police, the uniform was redesigned to have a much less threatening appearance. In particular, the position of the gun and baton on the belt were both re-positioned further more to the back as to make the gun less visible, which is believed to make officers feel much more approachable.

Vehicles

Police cars in Gassasinia generally feature a livery with a white base. Running horizontally across the car is a pair of light blue retro-reflective stripes. On either far-end of the side of the car, the stripes are disrupted by red bold text reading "NATIONAL POLICE شرطة وطنية" on the front-bumper end of the liver, and "911 ٩١١" towards the rear-bumper end. Each vehicle is equipped with a set of red and blue emergency lights, and a set of Whelen Engineering Company sirens.

Each vehicle features a run-lock ignition, allowing a car to run the lights with the key out. Furthermore, each vehicle is equipped with a long-range internal radio and PA system to contact dispatch and make verbal announcements. In the boot, each vehicle carries a locked rear-compartment carrying a long-rifle, a shotgun, a first-aid kit, specialised tools, traffic cones and other important equipment.

There is currently a program in place intended to equip police vehicles with Mobile Data Terminals designed and built by Hacohen Microsystems. Since the start of the program in 2017, all Highway and Traffic Patrol vehicles have been equipped with Mobile Data Terminals.

The most common models of vehicles used by the National Police are generally a mix of common police vehicles as found in [EUROPE] and [NORTH AMERICA] including but not limited to Crown Victorias, Land Rover Discoveries and Defenders, Mitsubishi Pajeros and Skoda Octavias.

Firearms

The standard sidearm of the the Gassasinian National Police is the Glock 17 9 milimetre handgun, which replaced a combination of Hi Power pistols, Model 10 and Model 27 revolvers during the 1990's. In the back of each police car, police officers carry a patrol rifle - generally a G3, M16A2 or increasingly, military-style MARS-L rifles - and a shotgun - generally a Benelli M3 or Remington 870.

Specialist Firearms Officers are usually equipped with a mixture of HK416 rifles, MP5 and SIG MPX submachine guns, and MP7 Personal Defence Weapons.

The standard handgun for detectives on the other hand, is a Glock 43 subcompact handgun which is easier to conceal than a full-sized Glock 17.
