Early History
The city of Harmaaturkki was originally founded as the castle of the King Matti, who ruled Joutsenmaa. The site was originally chosen due to its location atop a hill, overlooking the natural harbor below.
Medieval History
In 1567 the city was the site of the 1567 Shaman's Revolt.
Great Fire of Harmaaturkki
In the year 1735, the city of Harmaaturkki experienced the Great Fire of Harmaaturkki. Most of the city was destroyed by the blaze, including the administrative building of the regional government.
