Ukraine, officially the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (abbreviated as "UKSSR" or "Ukrainian SSR") is a republic of the Soviet Union. It is the country's second most populated republic and its third largest republic, with a population of 58.762 million and an area of 603.7 thousand square kilometres. It is home to the union's largest Russian diaspora by population, with 14.83 million people registered as "Russian" in the 2022 census. Commonly described as the Union's Breadbasket and subsequently Europe's breadbasket; Ukrainian wheat, grain, and cereal exports by percentage are among the highest in the world. It borders Poland to the west, Moldavia, Romania and Hungary to its west and southwest, Byelorussia to the northwest, Russia to its north and east, and the Black Sea to the south. Sevastopol, located in Crimea, is a major port on the Black Sea and serves as the headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet. The capital, Kyiv, was the capital of the Kyivan Rus', considered to be the first East Slavic state in history. The modern day territory of Ukraine was divided in history across numerous empires, including the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Ottoman Empire, Austria and the Russian Empire. Ukraine gained independence as the Ukrainian People's Republic before its establishment as a soviet republic in 1919. It is one of the founding members of the Soviet Union and was a signatory of the Treaty of Creation

Ukraine was particularly devastated by the German invasion of the Soviet Union; Ukraine's industrial base and infrastructure were either destroyed or damaged during the German occupation of Ukraine. A significant portion of the Soviet military casualties came from Ukrainian troops. Kyiv and Kharkiv, the two largest cities in the Republic, were nearly entirely destroyed due to Soviet policies of Scorched earth tactics and German attempts to "annihilate" Ukraine's infrastructure. Post-war recovery went well; though Ukraine's population was particularly devastated due to the war. Following the Second World War, Ukraine became a founding member of the United Nations due to a compromise between the Soviet Union and the United States. Crimea was transferred to Ukraine from Russian sovereignty in 1954 and since then has been one of the Republic's most important regions.
