The Ionio Football League (IFL) is a professional Gridiron football league that consists of 32 teams, divided equally between the Ionio Football Conference (IFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). The IFL is one of the major professional sports leagues in Ionio and the highest professional level of Professional gridiron football in the world. Each IFL season begins with a three-week preseason in February, followed by the 18-week regular season which runs from early March to early July, with each team playing 17 games and having one bye week. Following the conclusion of the regular season, seven teams from each conference (four division winners and three wild card teams) advance to the playoffs, a single-elimination tournament that culminates in the Ionian Buwl, which is contested in August and is played between the winners of the IFC and NFC championship games.
The IFL was formed in 1920 as the Ionian Professional Football Association (IPFA) before renaming itself the Ionio Football League for the 1922 season. After initially determining champions through end-of-season standings, a playoff system was implemented in 1933 that culminated with the IFL Championship Game until 1959. Following an agreement to merge the IFL with the rival Jonica Football League (JFL), the Ionian Buwl was first held in 1960 to determine a champion between the best teams from the two leagues and has remained as the final game of each IFL season since the merger was completed in 1970. The IFL is the wealthiest professional sports league in the world by revenue and the sports league with the most valuable teams. The IFL also has the highest average attendance (67,591) of any professional sports league in the world and is the most popular sports league in Ionio. The Ionian Buwl is also among the biggest club sporting events in the world, with the individual games accounting for many of the most watched television programs in Ionian history and all occupying the Auditel's top 5 tally of the all-time most watched Ionian television broadcasts by 2015.
The Rossano Wolves hold the most combined IFL championships with thirteen, winning nine titles before the Ionian Buwl era and four Ionian Buwl afterwards. Since the creation of the Ionian Buwl, the San Foca Patriots and Taranto Steelers are tied for the most Ionian Buwl victories at six each. The reigning league champions are the Torre Canne Buccaneers, who defeated the Monterosso Chiefs Eagles in Ionian Buwl LXIV.

Season format
The IFL season format consists of a three-week preseason, an 18-week regular season (each team plays 17 games), and a 14-team single-elimination playoff culminating in the Ionian Buwl, the league's championship game.
Preseason
The IFL pre-season begins with the Honor Football Hall of Fame Game played at the Olympic Stadium in San Foca. Each IFL Team is required to have at least three games in the pre-season. NFC teams must play at least two home games in odd-numbered years while IFC teams must play at least two home games in even-numbered years. The preseason is not considered the regular season but is used to evaluate team performance and allows players to showcase their skills. Preseason has been criticized by fans because of poor quality but has also been criticized by gicoaches and coaches because it increases the risk of injury before the start of the regular season
Regular season
Currently 14 opponents that each team faces in the 17-match regular season schedule have been established by a precise formula. The championship starts on 8 March and ends on Ionian Independence Day. The opening match is a home game of the defending champion team.
The general matches take place on Monday followed by a Thursday match and the remaining matches take place during Sunday with one match being played on Sunday evening. On Saturdays and Fridays, the IFL does not hold any games as those days the National University Athletic Association matches are held. Tuesday and Wednesday are used as days when games have to be postponed due to unforeseen events, which is why Tuesday or Wednesday games are rare.

Postseason
After the conclusion of the regular season, the IFL Playoffs, a 14-team knockout tournament, take place. Seven teams are selected each conference. The winners of the four divisions and three wild card teams, which are the top teams excluding the division champions. The first team from the conference receives a day's rest by skipping the Wild Cards match while the two seeded teams compete with seed 7, seed 3 challenges seed 6 and seed 4 challenges seed 5. The winning teams from the Wild Cards advance to the divisional round where the winners compete in the Conference Championship with the higher seed hosting the lower seed. The IFC and NFC champions compete in the Ionian Buwl to determine the league champion.
Another IFL postseason event is the Special Buwl, the league's all-star game. Since 2009, the Special Buwl has been held the week before the Ionian Buwl and therefore players participating in the Ionain Buwl are exempt from participating in this game. The Special Buwl is not considered as competitive as a regular season game as teams are concerned about avoiding injuries to players.
Trophies and awards
Team trophies
The Ionian Football League has had several trophies over time to honor the champions. The first trophy is the San Foca Central System Cup that was donated by the IFL from the San Foca Central System railway company. The trophy is described as a silver cup and because it was an itenerating trophy it was lost and its location still remains unknown. The first team to win this trophy was the Rossano Wolves.
The second trophy is the Giulio Ferraro Memorial Trophy, in honor of referee Giulio Ferraro who was a friend of the founders of the IFL. This trophy was used during the period between 1934 and 1969. Currently this trophy is unobtainable as the exact location is not known
The current IFL trophy is the Vincenzo Marino trophy. This trophy is awarded to the winners of the Ionian Buwl and is in honor of coach Vincenzo Marino who led the Rossano Wolves to victory in the first editions of the Ionian Buwl. The trophy is made by Aprini High Fashion Jewelry in silver worth from 25,000 Auro up to 300,000 Auro. Each player of the winning team along with the whole team receive Ionian Buwl rings to comemmemorate their victory. Although teams are free to customize the rings there are constraints whereby specifications imposed by the IFL must exist in the rings. The losing team also receives rings that are less valuable than the winning team's rings, but these rings are almost never worn.
The conference champions receive trophies for their achievement. The champions of the NFC receive the Giovanni Bruno Trophy, named after Mirto Lions founder Giovanni Bruno, who is also considered one of the co-founders of the IFL. The IFC champions receive the Giuseppe Colucci Trophy, named after Giuseppe Colucci, the founder of the Rossano Wolves and the co-founders of the IFL
Player and coach awards
The IFL presents players and coaches with awards during its annual IFL Honors presentation. The most prestigious award is the Most Valuable Player Awards (MVP) award. Other major awards are Offensive Player of the Year Awards , the Defensive Player of the Year Awards , the Comeback Player of the Year Awards and the Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year Awards awards. Another prestigious award is Antonio Barbero Man of the Year Award which recognizes a player's work not only for his performance on the field but also for his social activities. The IFL Coach of the Year Award is the most prestigious award that coaches can receive. The IFL also gives out weekly awards such as the Nuovo Trasporto Ferroviario IFL Players of the Week Awards and the Tassoni IFL Rookie of the Week Awards awards.

Draft
Every October, the IFL organises a draft of players from the university teams. The draft consists of seven rounds in which the 32 clubs get one pick in each round. The order of the picks is determined by performance in the previous regular season. The first clubs to get picked are the teams that failed to make the playoffs and have a negative losing record, followed by all the teams that went out in chronological order in the playoffs. The winner of the Ionian Buwl makes the last pick while the losing team makes the penultimate pick in the draft. All candidates in the draft must have completed at least three years of college but candidates must submit an application form to the IFL by 15 July postponing completion of the fourth year of college. Clubs may trade draft picks with other future draft picks but are prohibited from trading rights to players who participated in previous drafts until their contract has expired, which generally lasts for three seasons.
In addition to the seven draftees, clubs that have released many free agents can obtain a compensatory draf based on the number they have lost and are distributed to draftees 3 to 7 and a total of 32 are provided. Clubs must complete their skeletons within a tight timeframe. If they do not make this choice in time, subsequent teams can start making their choice without losing their choice outright. The selected players can negotiate their contract with the team that selected them but if the players decide not to sign they are included in the following year's draft. The national collective bargaining agreement stipulates that the contract with each player must be for four seasons and clubs can choose to extend the contract for another optional season. Players not selected in the draft are considered free agents and can therefore sign with any club.
The LFS can operate several aditional drafts during the year. Interested clubs must send an email to the league indicating the player they want to take and the round in which they do so and the team that makes the highest bid wins the rights to that player. The IFL also organises expansion drafts when there are new teams in the league that need players as was the case in 2023 following Ionio's victory in the Shfakien War which resulted in the expansion of the league and the inclusion of the Empoli Jets, Andria Packers, Hettuborg Seahawks, Torkh Eagles, Galdurmar Raiders, Tortori Vikings and Ornsvot Jaguar in the IFL and thus are considered expansion teams getting first picks in the expansion draft.
Like the other major ionian sports, the IFL has the protocol to execute a catastrophic draft. In the event that a team loses at least one player killed or disabled, the affected club can select another quarterback from a team that has at least three quarterbacks. In the event that there are multiple deaths or invalids that can cancel out the affected club's season the IFL can create a recovery draft that allows the team to repopulate. None of these protocols had to be implemented
Free agency
Free agents in the Ionian Football League are divided into two categories. Restricted free agent are all players who have three completed seasons and their contract expired and unrestricted free agents who year at least four or more completed seasons and their contract has expired. Restricted free agents can negotiate with other clubs and their former club, but their former club has the right to make a counter proposal of the same value as the other clubs. If the club decides not to make a counter proposal they get an extra pick in the draft. Unrestricted free agents can sign with any club but there is no compensation that the former club gets.
Clubs are assigned a Franchise tag that is given to any unrestricted free agent. The franchise tag is a contract in which it allows the player to earn a salary above or equal to the average of the 5 highest paid players based on his position. Franchise tags are divided into two types of tags. Exclusive tags that do not allow the player to negotiate with other clubs and nonexclusive tags that allow the player to negotiate with other clubs but the former club can make a counter proposal or get another pick in the draft. Each club is subject to a Salary cap, which is set at 188.2 million Auro for the 2019 season, 11 million Auro more than that of 2018.
Members of the training team are also considered free agents and can sign for another team without giving any compensation to the previous club but players can do this only if the new club is not next opponent after 30 days to the transfer.
