The Victoria-class Line Cruiser is a cruiser sized vessel in service with the Imperial & Federal Navy, and is named after cities and other population centres within the Imperial and Federal Union. The class is one of the most recent designs to enter active service with the fleet, the Victoria class was designed to serve as a long range patrol cruiser on deep void lanes, such as the Twin Eagles Corridor and the Northwest Passage. As such, when compared to other vessels of the R.u.B Navy, the Victoria class sacrifices firepower and armour in exchange for speed and endurance. As it has only recently entered into production, Victoria class vessels are still in the process of being deployed, but are becoming an increasingly common sight along trade routes under Imperial and Federal protection. Victoria class vessels are designed as true cruisers, capable of independent operations, without the need for screening ships, and able to operate without returning to a dedicated voidport for months or even years at a time. In fleet operations, the Victoria is intended to serve as a long range scout, forming the outermost pickets of the fleet's reconnaissance and picket elements, while also being capable of defeating enemy screening forces.

Development

The Victoria class was designed in response to changing needs within the Imperial & Federal Navy. The development of new tradelanes beyond the Talosian Expanse to spinward and deep into Beta fringeward created vast new responsibilities for the R.u.B Navy. Formerly limited mostly to operations within the Aquila Cluster, the Navy was now also tasked with maintaining continual naval patrols along vast trade corridors that stretched deep into the hearts of both the Betan and Delta quadrants of the Milky Way. The demands for ships to adequately cover the territory was immense, and the vast distances put a great strain on both ships and their crews. The question of how to deal with the Navy's new responsibilities formed a major issue in the Diet elections of 1110 P.L. Eventually, the Admiralty decided to develop a new class of warship, that would be better suited for long range missions, while also being less costly to produce and maintain.
