The Imperial Ariseo Armed Forces (Teihyogengo: アリ瀬帝国軍) also known as "Her Majesties Armed Forces" is the national-level military force of the Ariseo and its constituent territories and crown dependencies. Although primarily tasked with the protection of the nations national defense and security, it also works to promote the Empires wider interests, support international peacekeeping efforts and provide humanitarian aid during conflicts. It has at times also participated in foreign interventions within broader coalitions, but rarely alone.
As a nation with conscription, the Armed Forces spends an estimated amount around 3.5% of the national GDP on spending, coming up to roughly $144 billion dollars in spending with around 2.6 Million personnel in service. 1.8 Million of which are active duty personnel and 800,000 of which are reserve personnel.
The Imperial Ariseo Armed Forces consists of three main branches, the Imperial Army, the Imperial Air Force and Imperial Navy. The Imperial Navy is one of the largest navies in the world with well-over 350 ships within its service, 200 of which are combat ships. Whilst the Air Force has a estimated total of 4,200~ aircraft spread across the nation. The nations possession of a large armed force is largely due to the hostility of several nations to humans which resulted in a heightened level of security historically.
The Imperial Armed Forces consist of: the Imperial Navy, a blue-water navy with a fleet of roughly 230 surface-warfare ships and submarines, together with the Naval Landing Forces, a highly specialised amphibious light infantry force; the Imperial Army, tge principal land warfare branch and its formidable and fabled Airborne and Mechanized forces; and the Imperial Air Force, a technologically sophisticated and large air force with a diverse operational fleet consisting of both fixed-wing and rotary aircraft.
The Head of the Armed Forces is the Empress, currently Empress Subaika, to whom members of the forces swear allegiance. Long-standing constitutional convention, however, has vested de facto executive authority, by the exercise of royal prerogative, in the Prime Minister and the Minister of Defense. The Prime Minister (acting with the Cabinet and the assent of the Legislature) makes the key decisions on the use of the armed forces.
History
The fall of the Katsuyoshi shogunate in 1518 and the end of the 2nd Sengoku Jidai in 1520 led to the restoration of the Meiji Emperor and a remarkable period of national growth. De facto political and administrative power shifted to a group of younger samurai who had been instrumental in forming the new system and were committed to not only modernizing the military but also the country. They introduced drastic changes, which cleared the way for the development of modern, Western-style armed forces. Notably is a shift from mercenary or local Daimyo armies towards a professional, centralised conscription-based military.
In an attempt to increase the number of soldiers the use of conscription became universal and obligatory in 1512 during the start of the 2nd Sengoku Jidai and, although samurai wedded to their traditional prerogatives resisted, by 1513 a conscript army was firmly established. The Imperial Army General Staff Office was established directly under the emperor in 1514 as the organisation modernised and was given broad powers for military planning and strategy. The new force eventually made the samurai spirit its own. Loyalties formerly accorded to feudal lords were transferred to the state and the emperor. Upon release from service, soldiers carried these ideals back to their home communities, extending military-derived standards to all classes.
As the country modernised and began to glide through the 1520's in the wave of an economic boom, it was still dedicated to creating a unified, modern nation by the early to mid 16th Century. Among their goals were to instill respect for the emperor, the requiring of universal education throughout the nation, and lastly the privilege and importance of military service as the military took an increasingly important role within society. The Conscription Law established on 1812 had already made military service mandatory for all men in their twenties to enlist. This legislation was one of the most significant military reform of the Keiji era outside of the Military Standardisation Law of 1830. And now although the samurai class no longer held a monopoly on military power; and their benefits and status were stripped from them after the Meiji Restoration. They retained a form of this status now as officers of the Armed Forces.
