Estonia, officially the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic, is a disputed constituent republic of the Soviet Union in the Baltic region. It is surrounded by the Baltic Sea to the north and the west, Russia to the east, and Latvia to the south. Tallinn is the republic's capital and primate city, other cities of significance include Tartu, Narva and Pärnu.

Estonia has served as a crossroads for many civilizations and peoples. The territory of modern day Estonia has been continuously inhabited since the 9th millennium BCE. The Northern Crusades in the 13th century brought Estonia under the control of the Livonian Order and later the Danish, Swedish and Russian Empires. Estonia declared its independence on 24 February, 1918, coinciding with the collapse of the former Russian Empire in the Russian Civil War. It remained as a neutral country throughout the interwar period before being occupied and annexed by the Soviet Union as a soviet republic in 1940. Estonia briefly came under the jurisdiction of the Nazi-German Reichskommissariat Ostland during World War II.

Estonia's status in the Soviet Union is heavily disputed. Most international agencies and organizations, including the United Nations, recognize Estonia as an independent country (the Republic of Estonia) illegally occupied by the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union and its allies on the other hand recognize Estonia as an integral part of the Soviet Union.
