Canada (French: Canada), officially the Republic of Canada (French: République du Canada), is a sovereign state located in the northeastern portion of North America. The nation is bordered by Laurentia in the north, Acadia in the east, and the United States in the south. The capital city is Quebec and the largest city is Montreal. The core of the nation is centered along the Saint Lawrence River.
The French were the first to colonize Canada, starting in the 16th century. Canada became a British colony after the French and Indian War. Despite the change of power, the region would continue to be dominated by French settlers. Despite efforts to appease the French-speaking population, resistance to British rule would remain high. A series of rebellions erupted throughout British Canada beginning in 1837, involving both English and French settlers. With significant backing from the United States, a French-dominated republic was established in 1838, while an English-dominated republic was established separately and later annexed by the United States.
