The Atmoran Armed Forces (AF) (Iravian: Atmoraanse Krijgsmacht, AKM), also known as Her (Imperial) Majesty's Armed Forces or the Armed Forces of the Crown, are military services tasked with the defence of the Atmoran Confederation, its extrasolar colonies, and the dominions. They also promote Atmora's wider interests and provide humanitarian aid.
Today, the Atmoran Armed Forces consist of: the Imperial Navy, a blue-water navy with a fleet of 774 commissioned ships; the Imperial Marine Corps, a highly specialised amphibious and expeditionary force; the Atmoran Army, the Atmora's principal land warfare branch; the Imperial Air Force, a technologically sophisticated air force with a diverse operational fleet consisting of both fixed-wing and rotary aircraft; and the Imperial Atmoran Space Command the second largest space force with a fleet of 654 commissioned starships. Under the National Defence Act, the Atmoran Armed Forces are an entity separate and distinct from the Department of National Defence (the federal government department responsible for administration and formation of defence policy), which also exists as the civilian support system for the Forces.
The Atmoran Armed Forces is one of the largest militaries in terms of number of personnel. It draws its personnel from a large pool of paid volunteers. Although conscription has been used in the past in various times of both war and peace, it was used recently in 2071 during the outbreak of the Second Contact War, the National Service System has the power to conscript Atmorans, and requires that all Atmoran citizens and residents residing in the Atmoran Empire between the ages of 18-25 to register with the service.
The Commander-in-Chief of the Atmoran Armed Forces is the Atmoran monarch, Empress Katherine II, to whom members of the forces swear allegiance. The Atmoran Armed Forces is led by the Chief of the Defence Staff; Grand Admiral Lord Alphen, who is advised and assisted by the National Security Council and leads the Imperial High Command. Overseas and Extrasolar garrisons and facilities are maintained across the Atmoran Empire and in Systems Alliance.
