Russia, official the Union of People's Republics (Russian: Союз Народных Республик Soyuz Narodnykh Respublik) is a country in Eastern Europe, North Asia and parts of Central Asia.
Emerging out of the collapsing Russian Empire, the Soviet Union was founded as a socialist state under the control of the Communist Party, behaving as a functionally-one-party state under Nikolai Bukharin. After a period of economic reforms and victory over Nazi Germany in the Second World War, the Soviet Union emerged as a world superpower, along with the United States. The period between the Second World War and the late 1980s was characterized by the Cold War, which saw the Soviet Union and its allies in an ideological struggle with the United States and its allies. By the 1970s and 1980s the Soviet economy and political system stagnated under increased levels of bureaucracy and social decline. Mikhail Gorbachev led a series of reforms that saw the liberalization of the country as well as the end of one party rule. While this resulted in the partial collapse of the country, much of it remained intact as a renewed federation under a neosyndicalist Soviet democracy.
Russia is described as a superpower; with the world's second-most powerful military, and the second-highest military expenditure. It is ranked very high in the Human Development Index, with a universal healthcare system and a free university education. Russia's economy is the world's second-largest by nominal GDP and the third-largest by PPP.
It is a recognised nuclear-weapon state, possessing the world's largest stockpile of nuclear weapons. Russia's extensive mineral and energy resources are the world's largest, and it is one of the leading producers of oil and natural gas globally. It is a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, a member of the G20, the SCO, the Council of Europe, the APEC, the OSCE, the IIB and the WTO, as well as the leading member of the CIS, the CSTO, and the EAEU. Russia also hosts the ninth-greatest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
