Northern Wisconsin officially the Republic of Northern Wisconsin is a unrecognized state in midwestern United States. It lies between the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Lake Superior, occupying an area of 92,830 km2 (35,841 sq mi), with a population of about 661,000. Northern Wisconsin declared its independence from the United States in March of 2021 and has since gained no diplomatic recognition as a sovereign state. Most of Northern Wisconsin is covered in a mixture of plains and fields and dense forests. Its capital is Iron Mountain and largest city is Superior.
In January of 2021, a group of armed, disgruntled and upset locals in Polk County and adjacent counties organized to protect the area from state authorities, looters, violent criminals and illegal immigrants. The company, led by Wayne Aleksandr Kazaryev, formed a separate government, with national conservative, nativist and localist leanings, known as the "Free State of Polk". Occupying government buildings, newspapers and radio stations across Polk County, Kazaryev's company had dismissed the County government and declared their own Provisional State Council, with Kazaryev at the helm. The governor was informed that "upset locals" had made enforcing government mandates in the county impossible. By March of 2021, the Kazaryev company had taken effective control of the government in the county. The followers of Kazaryev raised their own flag over the courthouse in Polk county, and sent a letter to the Wisconsin governor regarding Polk County's independence from Wisconsin, and the United States as a whole.
Northern Wisconsin is a developing country with a middle-income economy and has undergone considerable economic reform since independence.
