The Bureaux Régionaux de l'Unité des Interventions Tactiques (English: Regional Offices of the Tactical Intervention Unit), more commonly known by its abbreviation BRUIT (literally meaning SOUND), is a regiment-level special operations tactical unit of the Aininian Gendarmerie, Ainin's civil military police. Its primary mission is counter-terrorism, but it also conducts hostage rescue, VIP protection and counter-insurrection operations.

Ostensibly a domestic police tactical unit, it has also been involved in operations overseas, and closely cooperates with the elite 2nd Battalion, 1st Naval Fusiliers. The force is said to be "world-class" and is Ainin's most prestigious domestic special operations unit.

It is garrisoned at AFB Batlevent, a large military complex in West Ainin.

History

Early history

BRUIT was founded on 14 July 1978 as the Escouade des Secours d'Urgence (Emergency Rescue Squadron) in the aftermath of the Hartlybank Centre hostage crisis that was mismanaged by law enforcement and led to the death of 13 hostages and three police officers. It was created out of the Intelligence and Security Directorate's hostage rescue team and the National Police's major incident resolution squad in order to centralise the national government's response to future terrorist incidents. It was renamed BRUIT in 1991 at the suggestion of its then-commander, Chief Special Constable Samuel de Rocheclair, and the full name was a backronym obtained from the French word for sound.
