The Commonwealth of Sovereign Nations, commonly known as the Commonwealth or the CSN, is a political organisation in Earth X comprised of several sovereign nations and their associated territories. It was created by the United Kingdom of Marimaia, the Kingdom of Denmark, and the Kingdom of Norway in an attempt to retain the prestige and influence that they enjoyed during the heady heights of the Marimaian Empire, as the Empire was undergoing a process of decolonisation. As territories were granted their independence from the Marimaian Empire they were offered the opportunity to retain close ties with their former colonial master in the form of the Commonwealth, which was founded on 28 April 1949 by the three kingdoms of the House of Margrave-Oldenburg. When the decolonisation process was completed by November 1971, the CSN counted nine nations as members. The United Kingdom of Marimaia, the Kingdom of Denmark, and the Kingdom of Norway were joined by the Dominion of Guiana, the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Republic of Cameroon, the Trucial States Protectorate, the Dominion of Sri Lanka, and the Dominion of Samoa. The United Kingdom of Marimaia still retained some overseas territories after decolonisation for a variety of reasons: these included Iceland, Greenland, Djibouti, the Maldives, Shanghai, and several smaller islands in the Atlantic Ocean. While CSN membership is now open to nations which were not originally part of the Marimaian Empire, there have been very few applicants from that demographic.
The Commonwealth pride themselves on fostering cooperation and free trade between nations regardless of political system, with democracies and dictatorships being equally welcome. This rather laissez-faire attitude towards rights and democracy has granted the Commonwealth access to abundant mineral resources, and has given the organisation a presence on almost every continent on the planet. Although they may not possess the economy or population of the likes of the Roman Republic or the Empire of Babylon, the Commonwealth have managed to hold onto the 'great power' status that the Marimaian Empire once held. The United Kingdom of Marimaia tends to wield that great power status on behalf of the organisation as it provides the Commonwealth's nuclear arsenal in addition to being the most influential member. The United Kingdom of Marimaia is also a permanent member of the Security Council of the World Congress and possesses veto power, a privilege which tends to be utilised in defence of other Commonwealth members or nations which are providing a useful distraction for the other great powers of the world.
