A referendum on integration into the Federation of Malaysia was held in North Borneo on 17 December 1962. Voters were asked whether or not they agreed with the terms of integration as drafted in the Malaysia Agreement of the previous year. The decision was an overwhelming victory for the "No" side with nearly 74.9% of voters rejecting the terms of integration on a turnout of over 90%. Despite a pre-referendum pledge to redraft the terms of integration if the "No" side was victorious, the scale of the victory led the government to abandon any attempts at future integration with Malaysia and, as a direct consequence, North Borneo became independent from the United Kingdom the following year.
