Chirov Tysyacha (Venadian: Чиров Тысяча, transcript: Chirov Ty'syacha) is a district of the Republic of Venadia. Chirov is coastal, and the district capital of Chirov is Venadia's largest harbour. Chirov is the 9th most populous district of Venadia, and one of the fastest growing, with a relatively large immigrant community. The regional capital of Chirov is Venadia's 5th largest city, with a population of 1.4 million, only Venagorod, Khandagrad, Viniyagorod and Liga being larger.
Chirov is known for its naval tradition, for being the first area of Venadia to become Christian and its sizeable manufacturing and shipbuilding sector.
History
Slavic tribes occupied the territory now known as Chirov Tysyacha since at least the 2nd century AD, being relatively late in terms of settlement. Older human habitation in the Chirov area dates back to at least the 8th century BC, when the area was populated by tribes of hunter-gatherers possibly related to the Koni people.
The city of Chirov was founded in 894 by Bremenn by the name of Kirgard, and was one of the first such cities founded in Venadia. Nearby slavic tribes included the Epsi, the Zilovi and the Namoreans. The city of Chirov itself was founded by the Damara Estuary, and served as the entryway for further Breheimian explorers, raiders and conquerors during the 10th century. Only a small minority of the city's population were nordic however, and the majority are thought to have always been slavs.
The Duchy of Chirov was established in 964 by Duke Mstislav Aspidov of the Zilovi slavs, and the city of Kirgard was taken in 966. The city became the seat of the Duchy, and in 971 Duke Mstislav became the first Venadian ruler to convert to christianity at the behest of Bishop Viktor. Chirov was one of the few allies of Venagorod during the Venadian Wars of Religion, but in 1095 was integrated into the Republic of Venadia, with the Aspidovs becoming a Great Boyar family of the Venadian Republic.
Chirov emerged as one of the primary ports of Venadia during the 14th century, as larger vessels had difficulty with getting to Venagorod located further inland. Chirov was one of the first cities to establish railways, with the Venagorod-Chirov railway being the first built in Venadia in 1873.
Politics
Politically, Chirov has varied significantly in terms of its alignments, and has had right-wing and left-wing governments. Traditionally, Chirov has been one of the Communist Party's strongest districts, especially in the 21st century. Otherwise, Chirov tends to align towards the big three parties, the Socialist Party, Liberal-Republican Party and the Unity Party. The tysyacha has been governed by a socialist-communist coalition since 2013.
