The 2nd Battalion, 1st Naval Fusiliers (commonly referred to as 2 (Naval) Fusiliers) is a battalion-sized formation in the Aininian Navy's 1st Naval Fusilier Regiment, part of the Aininian Naval Fusiliers Corps. Together with No. 542 (Special Operations) Squadron AAF, No. 1177 (Special) Auxiliary Squadron AAF and 1st Battalion, Parachute Regiment, it forms SPECCOM, or Aininian Armed Forces Special Operations Command, considered the most elite unit in the Aininian Armed Forces and one of the most elite units in WETO. Its commanding officer is Lieutenant-Colonel Timothy Vaughn.
2 (Naval) Fusiliers is a naval infantry unit but it is used as special forces in practice. Based out of AFB Concordia, it is often deployed around the world on a wide range of missions, both conventional and unconventional.
The Government of Ainin rarely comments on its operations, making it more secretive than most of its counterparts.
History
First Iteration
2 (Naval) Fusiliers was formed on 12 July 1943 as one of the three battalions of the Naval Fusilier Regiment, which was created out of the need to have a specialised naval infantry as the Second Great War pressed on. Attached to the Aininian Expeditionary Corps, it participated in the liberation of Chorean-occupied Namor along with East Luziycan and Namorese forces. The battalion saw limited action in Chorea in 1944, and was attached to the Chorean occupation force following the end of the war until 1946, when it returned to Ainin and was stationed at AFB East Forestia. As part of the demilitarisation following the war, it was disbanded on 4 June 1953, one month away from the tenth anniversary of its creation, leaving the Naval Fusilier Regiment with a single battalion.
Second Iteration
On 7 March 1969, a large Nautaryan force under the command of General Mohammed Mossed invaded the then-Aininian dependent territory of Concordia, making rapid territorial gains. By May 14, the last regular Aininian unit in the dependency surrendered. Following the disastrous Second Battle of Port Harold, in which three regiments of the Aininian Army attempted to land in Port Harold, the territorial capital, but were pushed back with heavy casualties, Aininian Armed Forces Command realised the need for a light naval infantry force, and a Naval Fusiliers Corps was created with four regiments. 2nd Battalion, 1st Naval Fusiliers Regiment was reestablished on 3 August 1969. It played a major part during the Third Battle of Port Harold, taking the city at a considerable cost. During the winter of 1969, it assisted the Concordia Corps in retaking Newton in the Fourth Battle of Newton, being the first unit to enter the liberated town. During the year of 1970, it was attached to the 2nd Rifle Regiment and was once again the first unit to enter the liberated city of Sainte-Agathe after the Second Battle of Sainte-Agathe, gaining it the nickname of The Liberators.
In October 1970, the Concordia Corps crossed the Radisson Line into Nautarya. Part of the southern flank, the 2nd Battalion took part in several battles and helped push the front to the McDonald-Samuel Line, 90km from the Nautaryan capital of Freedomtown, which eventually fell to the 5th Armoured Cavalry Regiment. The 1st Naval Fusilier Regiment was relieved and replaced by the 5th Infantry Regiment on 4 February, 1971, marking the end of the 2 (Naval) Fusiliers' deployment in the Nautarya region.
Stationed in Concordia following the war, it was the first infantry unit to be based out of the newly-built AFB Concordia, which eventually went on to become the largest base in Ainin. It saw limited action during the rest of the decade against Nautaryan pirates and domestic terrorists, and was mostly used for peacekeeping operations during the 1980s. During the 1990s, the force was used heavily to combat the guerilla warfare campaign of the WAIM in West Ainin.
In October 2002, the battalion undertook a daring mission deep into Nautarya, capturing Nautaryan Defence Minister Karim Moise, accused of funding the WAIM's insurgency, from his home in Downtown Freedomtown, in a controversial mission. Starting from this incident, the operations of the battalion have remained secretive, with government officials refusing to comment. It is thought that they were involved in the 2005 Boxing Day shooting and in the Changlang Crisis, but no official acknowledgement exists.
