The Federal Republic of Asucki is a small, lightly populated nation on an island located in the Middle Waters of Teremara.
History
Gaulic Colony
The colonial empire of Terre des Gaules established small trading outposts on modern-day Asucki. When news of the island’s colonization reached continental Teremara, the colony’s location in proximity to significant trade routes attracted opportunistic pirates from Madurin and Tavlyria.
Pirate Republic
By 1645, through a long campaign of brutal conflict led by now-legendary captain Aeksaen Evaer, the pirates found themselves in complete control over the island. A pirate republic ruled by direct democracy was established in place of Gaul’s rule. Evaer, an extremely popular figure among the pirates, acted as the this government's de-facto executive.
During this time, the Madurin-based Austrakian-Reinlan Empire's Tavlyrian colony of Figuerroa was exporting valuable goods back to the western continent through the Middle Waters.
Although the pirates made a steady profit from their Austrakian-Reinlan raids, they lacked in overall military capabilities. Over time, colonial incursions came closer to completely destroying the republic. In 1651, Aeksaen Evaer came to Gaul with a proposal. His pirates would stop attacking Gaulic vessels and instead place all of their focus on raiding Figuerroan goods, which Gaul would receive a generous share of. In exchange, Gaul would hire them on as privateers and stop hostilities. Gaul accepted, and the resulting contract lessened tensions for the next few decades.
After Aeksaen Evaer’s death in 1689, the Asuckian pirate republic returned to a more perfect form of a direct democracy. While Evaer understood that cooperation was necessary for survival, his peers disagreed, and many believed that Gaul was taking more than its share of the Figuerroan plunder. In 1690, a referendum was held in which the majority chose to end the privateer contract with Gaul.
This decision brought them back into a state of hostility with Gaul. Previously deterred from making moves by the threat of Gaul’s support, other colonial powers began working to put end piracy in the Middle Waters. Skirmishes between Asuckian pirates and the coalition occurred throughout the region. By the end of the seventeenth century, the republic had disappeared, and the few pirates remaining after the defeat were forced to renounce their ways and surrender their goods.
