The Zamastanian Department of State (DOS), or State Department, is an executive department of the Zamastanian federal government responsible for the nation's foreign policy and foreign relations. Equivalent to the ministry of foreign affairs of other nations, its primary duties are advising the president, administering diplomatic missions, negotiating international treaties and agreements, and representing Zamastan at the Coalition of Crown Albatross. The department is headquartered in Tofino, a few blocks from the Congressional Hall and the Presidential Mansion.
Established in 1809 as the first administrative arm of the executive branch, the State Department is considered among the most powerful and prestigious executive agencies. It is headed by the secretary of state, who reports directly to the president and is a member of the president's Cabinet. Analogous to a foreign minister, the secretary of state serves as the federal government's chief diplomat and representative abroad. The position is currently held by Chantelle Carson who was appointed by President Sabine Armitage and confirmed by Congressional Hall on September 22nd, 2022.
As of 2021, the State Department maintains 273 diplomatic posts worldwide, the most of any foreign office. It also manages the Foreign Service, provides diplomatic training to Zamastanian officials and military personnel, exercises partial jurisdiction over immigration, and provides various services to Zamastanians, such as issuing Zamastanian passports and visas, posting foreign travel advisories, and advancing commercial ties abroad.
