Kyldigard (Kyld: Klgard [klɡəθd]), officially The Kyldigardian Confederation of Cantons, is a multi-ethnic confederated republic located in northwestern/northern Pelia, strattling the edge of the (?*) Mountains. To its west is the Kesper Sea and to its north is the Northern Ocean(*) Its capital city is Moremist, and it has a population of about 27,000,000 Kyldigardian citizens and an unconfirmed number of both autonomous indigenous community residents and undocumented refugees. The Confederation is made up of 19 incorporated cantons, 9 autonomous indigenous communities, and 3 independent cities. Prior to 1597 AR (the year of the establishment of the Sixth and current iteration of the Confederation), the confederation was also divided up into 432 sub-cantonal divisions. As a country formed by religious refugees, Kyldigard is very liberal in their application of their de-facto state religion, Relyanism.
Etymology
History
It is generally accepted that the ethnic groups that now make up Kyldigard came from refugees from an obscure empire in the middle of continental Pelia known as the Kethesian Empire. Due to lack of surviving written history during much of this period, much of what is known about the early years of the Kyld people comes from Kethesian literature and passed-down word of mouth.
Around 410 AR, the Kethesian Empire began conducting a mass genocide of all Relyanites, as well as of homosexuals, the six-fingered, and the left-handed. This is, by many historians, one of the reasons why the flourishing pro-gay culture of Kyldigard exists as it does today. For around five years, an unspoken alliance between said persecuted groups led to the First Relyanite Revolt in late 410, a mass riot and street fight which ended in approximately 100 rebel deaths and no significant progress towards freedom. After the first revolt's failure, the ethnic groups who would one day form the Kyld people, as well as their allies, conducted a guerilla warfare campaign against the Empire for five years until the Slave Revolt of 414, which bolstered their numbers enough to cause the Second Relyanite Revolt, which was much more successful and briefly created unnamed, short-lived independent republics within the Empire's borders. Seeing the danger in allowing the people to stay within Kethesian borders, the Kethesian Emperor exiled all groups formerly ordered to be exterminated to outside the borders of the Kethesian Empire.
The geography outside of the Empire was harsh, which inspired the various people groups in exile to formally ally in early 415 AR, in what is often called the "Grand Alliance" or the Alliance of the Relyanite Tribes.
