Georgia,[a] officially the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic, is a constituent republic of the Soviet Union in Eastern Europe and West Asia. It is one of the three Transcaucasian republics, along with Armenia, which it borders to the south, and Azerbaijan, which it borders to the east. It additionally borders Russia to the north, the Black Sea to the west, and Turkey to the south. Georgia's capital and largest city, Tbilisi, accounts for nearly a quarter of the republic's population. Other major cities include Batumi, the capital of [[Adjarian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic|Adjara}}, Kutaisi, and Rustavi.

The states of Colchis and Iberia emerged out of what is now Georgia in the 14th and 4th century BCE. Iberia was principal in the unification of Georgia as a kingdom in the 13th century, where Georgia saw a {{wp|Georgian Golden Age|golden age} that lasted until the 15th century. After a period of decline, Georgia was gradually incorporated into the Russian Empire, with the last of the Georgian statelets annexed in 1867.

Georgia's independence was restored in 1918 after the Russian Revolution, with the declaration of a short-lived democratic republic that lasted until a Soviet invasion that overthrew the government and declared a soviet republic. In 1922, Georgia united with Azerbaijan and Armenia to form the Transccaucasian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic, shortly afterwards signing the Treaty of Creation which established the Soviet Union. Georgia became a constituent republic of the Soviet Union in 1936.
