North Korea,[a] officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea,[b] is a country in East Asia. It occupies the northern half of the Korean Peninsula and borders China and the Soviet Union to the north and South Korea to the south. It is bordered to the west by the Yellow Sea and to the east by the Sea of Japan (East Sea). North Korea, like its southern counterpart, claims to be the sole legitimate government of the Korean peninsula and its adjacent islands. Its capital and largest city is Pyongyang, other major cities include Hamhung, Chongjin and Nampo.
