Arthur XI (Arthur Hawise Siorious Raibeart Heranal; b. 2 July 1963) is the King of Gelonia. He ascended to the throne on 30 April 2012 after the death of his father, King Bran III.

Arthur was born in Oxonia as the eldest child of King Bran III and Sophie of Viendra. He became heir apparent and Duke of Oxonia upon his father's ascension. He attended primary and secondary schools in Gelonia, later serving in the Gelonian Navy after attending [naval college], in [country]. Arthur has married twice, first in 1982 to commoner Loeiza Taneta, which ended in divorce; and to Princess Alexandra of Garza in 1990. From his marriage to Taneta, he had one child Arthur, Duke of Oxonia, who died in 2012. He has seven children, all daughters, from Alexandra of Garza.

Arthur became King of Gelonia in 2012. His reign has seen improved relations with neighboring nations such as Latium, and relative government stability compared to his predecessors, with five governments across three legislative terms.

Early life

Arthur was born on 2 July 1963, during the reign of his grandfather King Robert IV at Lugudunon Cartrefu, in Oxonia, Gelonia. He is the eldest child of King Bran III (later Queen Rimoete II) and his consort Sophie of Viendra. At the time of his birth, Arthur was second-in-line to the throne, as the eldest son of the heir presumptive. He became the first future king to be born in Gelonia following independence.

From birth, he was styled “Prince of Oxonia”, due to his father’s rank as the eldest child of the heir apparent. He was baptized into the Church of Gelonia by the local Bishop of Oxonia at St Tugdualus in August 1963. His godparents are Michael I of Ghant (his great-uncle); Beladore of Gelonia (his great-aunt); Jocelyne of Gelonia (his aunt); and Joscelin V, Prince of Montgisard (Jocelyne’s husband).

He has six younger siblings: Riocus, Teresa, Nina, Beatriz, Joan, and David. Along with his siblings, Arthur was primarily raised at Lugudunon Cartrefu, which became the House of Rouanti's chief residence in the 18th century.

Arthur became heir apparent following the death of his grandfather on 19 September 1970. He became Duke of Oxonia, by virtue of his status as heir apparent, the same day; however, his investiture ceremony was not until 6 January 1971.

Education

Arthur began his education during the reign of his grandfather, Robert IV. He attended private school for his primary education, however upon the ascension of his mother in 1970, there was speculation that he and his siblings would attend state schools to enhance the popularity of the monarchy. Initially the decision to keep Arthur in private schooling was met with controversy following comments from his father, who, in off the cuff remarks, said that “No child of mine will attend some dirty public school.” Prince Hawise did not apologize for the comments, but later proved integral in passing state education reform in 1975.

At 15, Arthur was enrolled at Aberlour, a boarding school in coastal northern Gelonia. From 1981 to 1985, Arthur was educated at [foreign military academy], where he studied political science. On 14 October 1985, he was sworn in as a Second lieutenant in the Gelonian Royal Defense Forces.

Reign

On 30 April 2012, King Bran III passed away following a battle with lung cancer. Per the Gelonian constitution, Arthur’s reign began immediately. On 15 May 2012, Arthur was formally elected King by the Chiefs of the Vodan by unanimous vote. A public proclamation and a coronation was held immediately following Arthur’s election at Saint-Brieuc Basilica, in Oxonia.

The first year of Arthur’s reign saw an increase in parliamentary instability, when Prime Minister Anna Quiniou resigned following a loss of confidence. Arthur’s first three years as King saw three separate individuals serve as Prime Minister. The Bodadeg stabilized following the appointment of John Guegani as Prime Minister. Guegani was nominated to the office personally by Arthur following negotiations between Arthur, royal advisors, and key party leaders of the Bodadeg and Vodan. Arthur’s actions were praised, as Guegani and the Bodadeg maintained the same government for the next five years.

Arthur has made more foreign visits and state visits than any Monarch of Gelonia in the first eight years of his reign, resulting in an improved position of Gelonia internationally. His reign has also seen improved relations with neighboring Latium. This has been attributed to increased cross-border trade and the lift on restrictions on teaching Latin and Gelatine in border communities, as well as dynastic ties between each country’s ruling family.

Marriages

Marriage to Loeiza Taneta

Arthur first married in 1985 to commoner Loeiza Taneta. He first met Taneta in 1984 while attending a charity event for the Oxonia Foundation in Meud. According to courtiers, Arthur was quickly taken with Taneta, and they eventually married in 1983. The marriage was cause of controversy among the nobility and leadership of the Church of Gelonia due to Taneta's station as a commoner. Taneta gave birth to their only child, Arthur, on 17 June 1985. The birth of Prince Arthur initiated concerns of his eventual succession due to the morganatic marriage between Arthur and Taneta. The marriage quickly deteriorated, and by August 1984, rumors surfaced that King Robert IV was attempting to secure a divorce and have Arthur search for a new wife.

In early 1987, the Royal Household announced that Arthur and Taneta were divorcing, making Arthur the first member of the Royal Family to be part of a divorce.

Marriage to Alexandra of Garza

Prior to his divorce, Arthur was widely believed to be engaged in an affair, and actively seeking out a new bride. Following a string of unsuccessful courtships, Arthur and the Duchy of Oxonia announced that Arthur was courting Princess Alexandra of Garza, the eldest child and daughter of John VII of Garza and Alara of Ghant.

The Gelonian Royal Family announced the engagement of Arthur and Alexandra on 2 June 1989, upon which Alexandra relocated to Oxonia and resided in her own apartment separate from Arthur. Their first public event following the engagement was a visit to the Oxonia Zoo, in which they were accompanied by Arthur’s son.

The couple married on 19 April 1990, at Saint-Brieuc Basilica. They honeymooned from their wedding day until 17 May 1990, visiting Belfras, Sante Reze, Ascalzar, and finishing in southern Ghant. Arthur and Alexandra have six daughters over the course of their marriage: Lena (1990), Alaina (1992), Genovefa (1994), Fianna (1996), Moira (1997), Riona (1999), Eva (2002).
