Azerbaijan, officially the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic, is a constituent republic of the Soviet Union in Transcaucasia. It shares borders with Russia to the north, Armenia and Turkey to the west, Iran to the south and the Caspian Sea to the east. Its capital and primate city is Baku, other significant cities include Sumgait and Ganja.

The territory of Azerbaijan has been ruled over by various peoples and civilizations. Iranic peoples settled in Azerbaijan from the 7th to 6th centuries BCE. The Iranian Medians and Achaemenids and their successors came to continually dominate and control the region until the 19th century. Islam was introduced to the region with the Islamic conquest of Persia in the 7th century.
