Chilport is a city in the Zamastanian province of Tregueux, located on the northeastern base of the Plaimark Peninsula on the coast of the Cantalle Ocean, directly southwest of the city of Tregueux. What was ultimately to become the center of the borough of Chilport was first settled by Quetanan colonists in 1676 as a trading post in the fur trade. At that time, the Chil and the Chicou rivers had been used as waterways by the native tribes for centuries. The name Chil means the end of the deep water in the native Innu language. The city of Chilport was officially incorporated in 1845 as a municipality, and the arrival of the National Railway in 1893 stimulated the growth of Chilport's pulp and paper industries, particularly mechanical pulp production. Since the World War, the city has become an administrative and commercial center. During the summer of 1996, a record rainfall in the region caused major flooding in the downtown, as well as outlying areas. Dams were overrun, many bridges were destroyed throughout the region. The total cost of the disaster was recorded as 1.5 billion dollars, and it also killed seven people. The city was also severely impacted by Hurricane Alberta in 2001.
