The Dangish Empire, commonly referred to as the Empire or inaccurately Dungeyland, is a federal constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy consisting of 13 dominions, 11 colonies and a crown dependency. The largest dominion, Dungeyland, where the capital New London is located, is in the central portion of Astyria. The Dangish Empire is one of the largest countries by total area and an even larger country by purchasing power parity. An economic giant, the Empire is an ethnically diverse and multicultural nation with an extremely diverse geography and climate.
The Empire's form of government is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary democracy arranged in a federal manner, with the capital in New London. The current monarch - since 8 March 2010 - is Queen Ellen. The Empire consists of 13 legally equal dominions, who operate their own parliamentary democracies in a devolved manner. There are also 11 colonies within the Dangish Empire, who are represented in the Imperial Parliament but lack a dominion legislature or government. There is also a crown dependency, Amarak, attached to the Dangish Empire. Amarak is independent from the Dangish Empire in all regards except for loyalty to the Crown, foreign and defence policy.
The Dangish Empire is a developed country and has one of the world's largest national economies, with an estimated GDP in 2013 of $17.1 trillion. The economy is fueled by an abundance of natural resources, a well-developed infrastructure and high worker productivity. An economic powerhouse, Imperial goods are traded across the world and the Empire and its policies have a huge influence on the international economy. The Empire is one of Astyria's foremost powers, and has considerable cultural, scientific and political influence internationally. It is a recognised nuclear weapons state.
The Empire is not a member of the World Assembly. It is a member of the East Astyrian Treaty Alliance, the Polaris Initiative and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
Etymology and terminology
The 1657 Treaty of the Union declared the formation of an "Empire of the Dangish," although the state is also known within this document as the Dangish Empire. The term only came into common use in the 20th century, prior to which the nation was known, incorrectly, as Dungeyland, a term which refers to just one of the 13 dominions of the Empire. The location of the capital New London in Dungeyland, as well as the initial colonisation being led by Dungeyland, has caused Dungeyland to be used in reference to the entire nation.
The demonym Dangish refers both to citizens of the whole Empire as well as those of Dungeyland in particular. The use of the term is controversial, especially as the majority of citizens do not reside in Dungeyland itself. It is thus more common to use the term Imperial as a demonym, although Dangish continues to be used. Each individual dominion also has its own demonym too, which is used when specifically talking about the dominion.
Politics
The Dangish Empire is a federal state under a constitutional monarchy. The monarch, Queen Ellen is head of state of the Dangish Empire as a whole, and by extension each individual dominion. The monarch has the "right to be consulted, the right to encourage and the right to warn." As one of the few countries with an uncodified constitution, the monarch has theoretically unlimited powers, although they are limited by constitutional convention.
