Education in Emerstari

Jump to navigation Jump to search

Education in Emerstari is primarily the responsibility of the individual provinces of Emerstari, but the federal Department of Education administrates on a national level and may set regulations. It is not very common for Emerstarian children to attend a preschool (Emerstarian: føreskole), but school is mandatory for children from the ages of six- to fifteen-years-old. From six until eleven years of age, children will attend primary school (Emerstarian: furstskole), and from twelve until fifteen years of age, they will attend secondary school (Emerstarian: tvaskeskole). After secondary school, many Emerstarian students choose to attend a vocational school from the ages of sixteen- until eighteen-years-old known as gynasjom. A school year begins in late August and runs until early July; it is broken firstly by a harvest break (20 Sept. – 10 Oct.), secondly by a Christmas break (6 Dec. – 6 Jan.), and finally by a planting break (15 April – 30 April). Summer break (1 July – 31 Aug.) is considered to be between school years.

Emerstarian parents may choose to education their children in a number of ways, including with public education, private education, and home education. Public schools in Emerstari are locally-funded and are affiliated with the Church of Emerstari; private schools are often associated with a certain religion as well, Lutheran or not. According to the Department of Education, 54% of children attended a public school, 34% of children attended a private school, and 12% of children were home-schooled. According to information from the same report, they stated 68% of parents of children attending a public school were glad that public schools are affiliated with the Church of Emerstari. A further 13% did not hold an opinion.

Origin

A 1978 graduation class from a Vernian secondary school.

The Foderelskekongress passed the Skolskelager in 1876, a series of laws creating a new plan that would bring forth the creation of public schools and a regulated curriculum. Prior to this point, Emerstarian children were homeschooled and tutored or attended a private school. The Skolskelager created Alltskeskole, or general school, which consisted of four grades. Later in 1901, three more grades were added and Alltskeskole was divided into furstskole and tvaskeskole. The current system, making schooling mandatory from the ages of six- to fifteen-years-old, was devised in 1937 when the concept for a gymnasjom was introduced.

Primary education

Private schools are given a certain amount of freedom on what they will put into their curriculum; however, public school curriculums are generally as follows. In primary school, students will be taught in fifteen subjects, which are, according to the time allocated to them: Emerstarian, general mathematics, natural science, physical education, history, religion, music, geography, technology, and visual arts. These subjects are taught in three stages: lower stage (grades 1-2), middle stage (grades 3-4), and upper stage (grade 5).

Once students enter tvaskeskole, there is a greater amount of freedom given to the students in regards to what subjects they would like to take. To graduate tvaskeskole with a general dipolma (Emerstarian: alltskemåndeseksemansnot), students are required to have taken four years of Emerstarian, taken four years of math including algebra and geometry, taken three years of history including Emerstarian history, taken three years of science including biology, taken three years of physical education, taken two years of the same foreign language, taken two years of home economics, and taken one year of art. As for optional classes, nearly all schools will offer religion, engineering, geography, government, economic, geology, chemistry, choir, band, food, theatre, and writing classes among others.

Grading

Emerstarian students will begin to receive grades for their work from second grade; prior to then, they will receive an individuslketaskerringsplan, which translates to an indivudual assessment plan, that contains teachers' assessments of the student's behavior and knowledge.

The grading system in primary school uses the grades A, B, and C as passing grades, E as a failing grade, and D as a "warning" grade of sorts.. If a student cannot be graded due to extensive truancy, the student will receive a dash instead of an E; a dash is not considered a grade. If a student is on the verge of receiving an E in a certain subject, the teacher thereof is responsible to write the student and the student's parents a review on how to improve themselves.

National tests

In grades 3–9, national tests are administered to all students. The aims of these tests are to assess both the students' and the schools' progressm and they are considered when dispersing a province's education budget. In grade 4, there is a second national test to specifically assess students proficiency in Emerstarian, basic math, science, and history.

Gymnasjom

Vocational schools known as gymnasjomner last for three years (from ages sixteen to eighteen); attendance is optional, but there is a 99% enrollment rate among recent graduates from secondary school. There are twenty-one different programs with various focuses. These programs often give students often give students various licenses and certificates to enter the workforce and/or qualifications to pursue college if they choose to.
