Greens - Ecological Action (Weranian: Grünen - Ökologische Aktion) commonly known as the Green Party is a political party in Werania. Founded in 1977 as a reaction to the growing of anti-nuclear energy, environmental, peace, new left, and new social movements, the party first won seats in the Bundestag in 1987. The Green party is currently the third largest in Werania in terms of its votes being considered alongside the National Consolidation Party and Social Democratic Radical Party of Werania to be one of the major parties in Weranian politics. The party currently heads the provincial governments of Westbrücken and Elbenweis.

The Greens had a rapid rise in their profile in the late 1980's as the Weranian left shifted from the hegemony of industrial unionism towards more diverse movements, with the Greens considered close to the student protesters of 1972. The Greens entered government briefly under Wolfgang Löscher from 1992 to 1999 as part of the pink-red-green coalition although governance proved difficult for the party which suffered much internal disagreement on the policies it implemented. The Greens declined as a minor party in the 2000's being one of the smaller parties in the Bundestag.

During the late 2010's the Greens rose in popularity and in the 2019 federal and Euclean elections the Greens became the third largest party and have since overtaken the SRPO as the second largest party in opinion polls. The Greens rise has been attributed to a greater concern about climate change amongst the electorate, opposition to the economic policies of the establishment parties and a shift from the left to a more centrist position by the Greens with a greater focus on social issues.

History

Ideology

The Weranian Greens were one of the earliest of their kind to attain success in Euclea and so have been influential in Green politics. The initial 1977 policy document called for Green politics to be based on three principles - ecology, grassroots activism and non-violence. At their founding the Greens were a far-left party that nevertheless rejected the traditional emphasis of class struggle in favour of ecologist goals. Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s it was dominated by former student activists who were part of the radical left although had more centre-left politicians within its ranks. Following the 2015 party conference the party has moved closer to being a centre-left party taking votes from the Social Democratic Radical Party of Werania.

The Greens support a 40% reduction in CO2 emissions, phasing out nuclear and fossil fuel energy in favour of renewable sources, fostering sustainability and promoting eco-friendly urban planning. The Greens also promote social justice, multiculturalism and gender equality often proposing to liberalise immigration and citizenship laws as well as gender quotas in both the private and public sector. They are seen as the party most traditionally in favour of expanding LGBT+ rights. The Greens have traditionally supported Euclean federalism despite having major differences with the Euclean Community particularly on issues regarding decentralisation.

The Greens are seen to be split between more radical-left alter-globalisation and anti-capitalist wing and a more moderate liberal wing. The party has moved to the centre in recent years but is still perceived by many particularly conservative voters as being far-left.
