The Democratic Republic of Hatstheput is a small country, which lies in the island of Hatstheput located in the southeast sea of Anteria, near the island of Ustris. This state was founded for providing liberty to its inhabitants. Under this doctrine, several catholic Hofflandians arrived to the island, immigrating to Hatstheput for economic reasons rather than because it's set of values. However, this island which had been formerly colonized by Prybournean (which were ruled under the Canter Republic), protestant colonizers, brutally opposed to the new Hatstheputian government. When the Canter Uprising took place, the Prybourneans living in Hatstheput proclaimed their "de jure" independence and the Hatstheputian War of Independence took place. After the revolutionaries succeeded, the Hofflandian and Hatstheputian authorities of the island agreed to create a new state, the Democratic Republic of Hatstheput, on the basis of three pilar values: liberty, meritocracy and justice, which marked the beginning of the modern state of Hatstheput.

Ethymology

The word Hatstheput comes from a hofflandized version of the name some Singa tribes gave to a river circulating near the former colony of Colonia della Torrevieja. This river received that name because Hasaput was the god of fertility for the Singa creeds of that time.
The first name given to the island of Hatstheput was Tanah Yang Dijanjikan, which would translate in english as "the promised land". The Tsokeikans gave Hatstheput the name of Ashinawareta Hima, coming from the phrase ushinawareta shima, which means "lost island".

History

Precolonization period

The first known inhabitants of Hatstheput were the Singa. Approximately on the year 100 B.C, tribal chief Inti Burat managed to successfully establish the kingdom of Burat, named as so because of the dinasty which governed it, in the northeast of the nation.

King Inti I, founder of the Burat kingdom

The capitals of this kingdom were Bandar Emas and Bandar Kematian, meaning in english "golden city" and "death city". Bandar Emas was the town were the king and its court lived and carries out their lifes. Bandar Kematian was reserved almost entirely for the clergy, and it had large temples and graveyards. The Singa people were firstly polytheistic and had their own mythology, but it was king Gamal I who legalized and made popular Islam in Burat, after merchants from Rumelioglu arrived to the island, giving away not only their goods but their religion and culture. This provoked several risings throughout the subdued tribes og the whole Hatstheput, which eventually caused the kingdom of Burat to decline, leaving only the two capitals of this kingdom under their control. Burat had now 2 cities under their banner, but they rapidldly gained influence and many Singa people from former subdued tribes went there, adopting also Islam.

Astariaxi rule

The actual territoru of Hatstheput was colonized by Astariaxi forces in 1632. There were two colonies in Hatstheput,Colonia della Torrevieja and Praia. These, however, didn't managed to grow ,as most Astariaxi people where in the mainland, and don't had interest in Hatstheput. The only interest the empire had under this colonies were economical. According to early documents from the colonial age, the island was inhabited by 200 people who moved regularly between Hatstheput and Astariax. The most valued resources from Hatstheput were spices, coffee, chocolate and precious stones. The colony entered in a decline after the Singa natives, who inhabited the north and had been pacific untill that moment, decided to fight the Astariaxi. In 1860, this forced the Astariaxi to leave, and they didn't recolonized as they didn't seen that invasion as worth it.

After the Astariaxi left, some liberal Prybournean Canterians disatisfied with the socialist-leaning government of the Canter Republic arrived in Hatstheput in order to start a new life. The ideals of this new community were liberty, meritocracy and justice. They founded the city of Kingstown in 1868. Altough they didn't officially claimed their independence in order to avoid the Canter Republic from militarily invading their island, the Prybournean pioneers considered Hatstheput as their home and responded to the Hatstheputian authorities rather than to the Canterian ones. The Hatstheputian government had during those times its own flag and several institutions which were, partially or totally, independent of the Canter Republic, making Hatstheput therefore a "de facto" independent state from such country. The "state" was unofficially called the Whig Republic of Hatstheput.

Arrival of the Hofflandians

The Hofflands, well-known for their mercantilistic and colonial aspirations during that time decided to colonize Hatstheput too. They started colonizing the southeastern part, where they formed the city of Victoria. The Hofflands, who colonized Hatstheput because of economic reasons, decided to bring more manpower to the island when they saw the great amount of resources which were available in the island. The Hofflandians had soon more people than the Prybourneans, who firstly inhabited the island. This outraged the Canterians, although no conflict took place within these two territories.
Unlike the Prybourneans, the Hofflandians never had aims to declare independence from the Hofflandian mainland, and the Hofflandian Hatstheput was just one overseas territory of such nation.

Canterian Revolution

With the breakout of the Canterian Revolution in 1890, which advocated for the liberation in both national, political and economical terms of the peoples residing within the Canter Republic, Hatstheput sided with the revolutionaries and officially declared independence, an act which marked the beginning of the Hatstheputian Independence War.

Formation of the modern state of Hatstheput

After the successful independence war on behalf of the Hatstheputian seccesionists, the Whig Republic of Hatstheput was established. It was the president Thomas Monroe who suggested the Hofflandian governor Ludwig Rutte to unify their territories and create a multicultural state, the Democratic Republic of Hatstheput. The Hofflandians firstly refused such proposal, but Ludwig Rutte, who was a man of liberal ideals, believed that the creation of that nation would make of the island an oasis of prosperity and liberty in comparison to other countries, and after he convinced the Hofflandian politicians of the mainland to agree to such unification, the Democratic Republic of Hatstheput was founded in 1896, 6 years after the independence of the Whig Republic of Hatstheput

Economy

Hatsttheput currently has a very well-developed, capitalist economy, which mainly relies in the third sector financial activities. Its privileged location in the middle of the sea provides Hatstheput a good position for logistical operations. The ports of Hatstheput have a considerable size, and are one of the largest of the region. But, however, Hatstheput relies in the production of services for obtaining their GDP, the biggest sectors in Hatstheput are insurance and gambling. Hatstheput ranks 2nd in the Economical Freedom Index (Anteria), making it one of the most liberal economies in Anteria, and one of the few tax heavens in Anteria.
With the appliance of Hatstheput to the Dokodo Union, the Hatstheputian exports grew.
There is a very notable wealth gap between the Protestant North, more agrarian and rural, and the Catholic South, more industrialized and urban. However, it's the Northeastern part of Hatstheput, made up by native Singa people, the one with the lowest wealth. The poorest province, Johpur, has an average income per of 4450$, meanwhile the richest province, South Victoria, has an income of 75.250$, a difference of almost 17 to one.

Education and science

Hatstheput's educative system is well-known in Anteria for being austere and liberal. The Hatstheputian government relies on school vouchers for providing its citizens with education, although private schools and homeschooling are directly encouraged by the government, and are where the most children go to. Hatstheput ranks well in the Anteria's PISA test, ranking 31th in average grade. According to the PISA test, Hatstheputians students are specially good at maths and social sciences, slightly over average at literature and language and below average in hard sciences.

In science, Hatstheputians have achieved several successes. Hatstheputian scientists invented the RN72 Rifle, the submarine, the helicopter and the electric car.

Infrastructure, energy and environment

Logistical infrastructures are privatized in Hatstheput. Roads are maintained and made thanks to advertisement and crowdfunding, tolls are uncommon but occasionally used to make roads profitable.
Electricity in Hatstheput is also in private hands. Most of Hatstheput's energy is produced by nuclear power stations, which accounts for the 82% of the total electricity produced in Hatstheput. Hatstheput is self-sufficient, since it's an island and importing electricity would be difficult and expensive. Hatstheput has one of the lowest market prices in the region for its energy.

However, for most of the Hatstheputian population (65%) religion is of "limited relevance" according to the last demographic poll carried out within Hatstheput.

Only 5% of the population is of foreign origin. There has always been a constant flow of Prybournean and Hofflandians inmigrants in Hatstheput. It was in the 90s when the origin of the immigrants diversified, and Astariaxi, Gabrielt and Zaananiamian communities started to grow and gain importance. With the adherence of Hatstheput to the Dokodo Union, the amount of people immigrating to Hatstheput from Astariax and Gabrielland grew.

Culture

The Hatstheputian culture is heavily influenced by that of their colonizers, Prybourne and the Hofflandian Union. However, Hatstheput has developed some unique cultural aspects thanks to the interaction between the Prybournean, Hofflandian, Singa and Tsokeikan cultures. For instance, some traditional Singa festivities are official holidays in Hatstheput, and the Dobbelstrumppet is a musical instrument which is a hybrid between the traditional Houghlander trumpet and the Obawoo, a traditional Singa horn instrument.

Literature

The oldest written work found in Hatstheput was found in the Ruhan Temple, in the Singa city of Bandar Emas. It was the Drumidari, a large mythologic epic describing how the world was created by the Singa gods, and how this were born. Few other written works from the Singa era were found on Hatstheput, and it is known that a large part of books describing the Singa mythology were burnt down in the Red Night, in which king Gamal I ordered the deletion of all books and artwork which could be considered "heretic" by the standards of the high Muslim clergy of the time.
After the Singa era, most books were written in both Hofflandian and English, the languages of the colonizers of Hatstheput. The most relevant classic writers of Hatstheput were Hermann Draxler, who wrote several novels such as "East Hatstheput" or "The Men of the Bay", with a heavy social critic towards "the lazy and evil, the scum of our society", in which he subtly promoted his liberal-conservative views, and John Henry Norris, who wrote novels such as "The Price of Freedom" or "Ronald" in which he critiziced the bussiness practics of the time and the "worrying" situation of the working class.
