Hella, officially the Solar State of Hella, is a nation in southeastern central Mars. It is bordered by Gang Territory to the west, south, and east, and Unincorporated Mars to the north.

Hella ranks high for civil liberties, HRC-FS human rights, and political freedom. Hella is considered the most free country on Mars, along with the highest population of Terran immigrants. Hella has close ties with the Federation of Sol and is the location of the main space docking point on Mars. Civil liberties are protected by Hella’s constitution and judicial committee. Hella’s borders are closely guarded and very secure against the citizens of the Gang Territory and Unincorporated Mars. Hella’s government is run by a national council headed by the Kaan. Every member has a constituency which democratically elects their councilmember. The Kaan is elected by the council.

Hella has the largest economy on Mars and rivals most on Earth. Large areas of the country are terraformed with farms, resorts, and research facilities. Manufacturing, food production, technology, and terraforming operations are well-established in the country. Hella has made efforts in claiming land on the southern polar ice cap, however these areas are inhabited by extremely dangerous groups that participate in deadly guerilla warfare. Hella is the first land-based country visited and resided in by the Vareki. However, the Vareki economy does not have any significant influence in Hella.

Etymology

Hella is also the name of the whole crater basin, which was named by Giovanni Schiaparelli in the 1800s. It is unclear why he named it Hella, since this was the Greek name for Greece.
